Is it wrong to say that I think I'm going to enjoy this Hobbit trilogy way more than the Rings trilogy?
Make no mistake, for me, the Fellowship of the Ring Extended Edition is a masterpiece. It's in my top 20 of last decade easily. It's just that good of a motion picture. Alas, no matter which cut of the last two films I try to watch, I can't get through them. Over and over again, I just see the flaws in the adaptation process. The flaws in the visual effects execution. The flaw in Peter Jackson over directing the last two pictures. Just can't get through them.
Meanwhile, an Unexpected Journey hits screens and home video and while it's flawed to the hilt, there's just something about the tale of Bilbo Baggins, Freeman's performance, and having McKellen playing this Gandalf for three films that just great appeals to me way more so than the tale of Frodo Baggins and Aragorn. I may have felt differently if the Lord of the Rings was the tale of Aragorn's ascension but that's not the main thrust of the story, even while being VERY integral to it.
I do not agree with starting out this new trilogy with Ian Holm and Elijah Wood because it's completely unnecessary but I'm greatly looking forward to this extended edition and seeing what they add back in, even though I think the film is bloated beyond reason by at least 30 minutes. Still, I am hoping that Jackson gives a proper introduction to Middle Earth in the extended edition of an Unexpected Journey and not just lean on the nostalgia of the prologue of the Fellowship of the Ring for the information. Because, for this viewer, if this Hobbit trilogy continues to entertain and thrill me to the end, there's a good chance I'd never watch the Rings trilogy again and so I'm hoping that the Hobbit trilogy feels fully complete and doesn't technically need the assistance of the Rings trilogy in order to feel complete.
Sorry for the long post but it's been on my mind as I go back through an Unexpected Journey and deciding whether or not to finally picture of the BD or just wait for the extended edition.
