A tax abatement has been approved by the city of Terre Haute, Indiana so that Sony Digital Audio Disc Corporation (DADC) can expand and retool their existing production lines to incorporate Blu-ray. Next month, the city council is expected to ratify their decision, and the abatement will become official.
Sony DADC has proposed to spend $75.8M during the renovations, which will expand their Blu-ray production capacity in the United States. As the forth largest employer of Terre Haute, employing over 1,200 residents, the city found it necessary to grant the abatement in order to ensure no jobs were lost as Sony DADC continues to update all their production lines to Blu-ray. No specific additional capability was given by Sony, but as one of only two DADC facilities in the US (the other facility is located in Pitman, NJ), the renovation should provide a significant boost to their production ability.
The expansion is set to begin May 15th and conclude October 1st of this year.
