Default Discussions of politics/religion

Ok so far I have discovered that we cannot discuss the following:
1. Politics regardless the context. Banned. I personally don't give a rats ass about current US politics but the topic in general is of interest to me and we are bound to come across the topic when discussing movies, actors ect... It is part of everyone's life.

2. History that involves how politics evolved. Banned. Give me a break here.

3. Religion. Banned. Again this is part of the lives of the majority of people on this planet. It is also something that is bound to come up when discussing movies.

I'm sure there are other topics that have burned some of you here.

Here is an idea, how about creating a set of rules based on an agreed upon community standard? Examples would be no bullying, harassment, hate speech, trollbaiting etc... That is pretty cut and dry in my opinion.

People that would break that standard regardless of topic would get punished. Punishment should be for flagrant disregard for the community standards such as vicious attacks against other members regardless of topic. Locking or moving threads should be enough in most cases.

With all due respect, the idea of banned topics will no longer wash now that blu-ray has won the format war and people googling blu-ray will inevitably come here to ask questions. Those people will want to ask questions about Charton Heston, Ben Hur, The Ten Commandments, The Passion of Christ, Born on the 4th of July, Dick and Patriot. Shall I go on or do you all get the point? We should either allow adults to discuss these topics or not bother discussing movies at all.

Blu-ray is no longer just some small website dedicated to blu-ray but it is now the premier destination to discuss blu-ray titles and because of this dramatic change in it's role, the management must take a long and hard look at their rules.

I think the admins should either face up to their new responsibility or sell the site to a group who will.

If you want to ban anyone, ban people who do the attacking of others based on their religious, political, gender or ethnic affiliation. Stop punishing everyone in a bogus PC facade of being "fair". We are no longer in elementary school.

To paraphrase Robert De Niro, what is this, amateur night? Big sites need to have bigger staff and rules that appeal to a larger audience.

BTW. If the issue is a matter of anonymity breeding immaturity, why not institute age verification via a credit card for regular members? How about a "club" membership with additional privileges such as coupon codes from vendors like Amazon?
