did you connect the PS3 directly to the TV and see if it still did the same thing?
Sure did...and it worked beautifully. It seems to be a incompatibility issue between PS3s & Yamaha RX-V1700/2700 receivers. Other users reported the same problem at "the other" popular AV forum (I'd inlcude the link but not sure if it's allowed). Some claim to have fixed it by having sent their unit to a local Yamaya technician/etc for a simple upgrade or modification and it worked.

I'm currently stationed overseas in Korea & purchased the PS3 & receiver from the base BX. I seriously doubt the clerks there would know how to do anything technical w/the receiver...

I currently have the PS3 connected (via HDMI) directly to the TV w/the audio being handled by a TOSLINK cable from the PS3 to the receiver...but it's the principle of it all; a 1080p passthrough receiver should work the way it's supposed to. I might end up returning the receiver & purchasing something else in the future that can handle the work.

Any last minute solutions/setting from other PS3+RX-V1700 owners out there before I do so?

EDIT: A firmware update is available (from 2006) to the RX-V1700 via Yamaha's official website that corrects the following issue: instances when switching between certain digital signals on an RX-V1700 or HTR-6090, the digital signal will mute for an extended period of time or will not return.

That sure sounds alot like my problem...I'll post the results once they become available. I doubt this thread is relevant to many people anymore, but IF it fixes the problem...the next poor soul who googles PS3+RX-V1700 will find what their looking for.

Once again, thanks.
