You lose regions of the original picture, but you gain resolution (more pixels devoted to any given thing you can see on screen), so it's a tradeoff. Obviously if the director's intended framing is known you want to go with that, but my understanding is that in the case of
On the Waterfront it's a bit ambiguous.
