You don't need a 1.4... you are going to need a HDMI switch though, or another long HDMI cable to run to your projector.
What we've proved here is that your Onkyo cannot pass a 3D signal through to your projector at all. Which shouldn't surprise us as it is a 1.3 receiver
The point of the two ports on the back of your Sony is so that you can send a video signal directly to your display AND a second one to your receiver to process sound. So one HDMI cable needs to go to your Epson and a second one needs to go to your Onkyo.
Now here is where you have two options to do this.
1. Run a second HDMI cable from your Sony all the way to your Epson... that was my original suggestion, but lots of people cannot get a second HDMI cable back to their projector without a whole lot of fuss so this may not be an option for you... if it is... you will run it to HDMI 2 on your Epson.
To watch a blu-ray you will need to switch your Epson to HDMI 2 and you will need to switch your Onkyo to 'Blu-Ray' or whatever HDMI port you plugged your Sony into.
2. Introduce an HDMI switch into the mix. A 2x1 switch should be fine. You take the HDMI cable that is currently coming from your Epson and plug that into the output of the HDMI switch. You then take the Onkyo and plug that into one of the inputs on the switch and then you take your Sony and plug it into the other. You still need to plug a SECOND HDMI cable from the Sony into the Onkyo... you need to get sound to the Onkyo.
When you want to watch a Blu-Ray you will need to flip the switch over to the input that has the Blu-Ray player on it. When you want to watch anything else you have running through your Onkyo you will need to switch over to that input and again you will need to switch the Onkyo over to your 'Blu Ray' input or wherever you plugged the second HDMI cable into.
Is this getting clearer at all to you, cause I feel as if I'm typing myself into circles, it is totally clear in my head but not coming out terribly clear here
The benefits of the second second solution is that you don't need a second long run of HDMI to your Epson and you don't need to switch inputs on the Epson every time you want to watch a 3D movie... you only need to change inputs on the switch and the Onkyo.
Another thing that isn't clear to me is if a 2D picture will display fine when you are running 2 HDMI's out of the Sony... I'm wondering if you will need to switch to HDMI 2 on your Epson or change the input on the HDMI switch ONLY if you want to view a 3D movie... I'm not sure about this, but something makes me think that is the case.
