Actually, Weinstein isn't responsible for Epic Movie and Meet the Spartans (they're Fox)--
The Weinsteins broke up with Jason Friedberg and Aaron Setzer after "Scary Movie 2", brought in the Zucker Bros. to write Scary 3+4, and there's been a bitter division between the two sides ever since.
The Weinstein/Dimension half had been trying to do a superhero spoof as far back as Scary 3 (back when it was going to parody Hulk and Daredevil)--
Courtesy of Netflix--who jumped the gun on listing the movie while still in preproduction--check out a glimpse of the "Superhero!" script we almost got in 2007:
Quote:
The team that lampooned horror movies with the Scary Movie series takes on the superhero genre with this send-up penned by Craig Mazin. When the mayor of Fabtopolis (the sublimely silly Leslie Nielsen) is kidnapped by magician The Great Jim, a quartet of superheroes is called upon to save him: Beakman (the leader), Squak (the wannabe), Cleara (the see-through heroine) and The Stoner (a loser who becomes a large stone monster when high).

(Ouch...All they had for five years was the title, and be glad we only got out of it what we did.)
