USA Amazon Pre-order Guarantee Question

I recently ordered an item that dipped in price from my original amount but I paid with a gift card. Previous purchases automatically received a refund for the difference when paying with a credit card. Do you actually have to contact customer service to receive an adjustment if paid with a gift card or rewards points? This is a first for me. Thanks.
