I don't remember anything being very limited about comics in the 90s. Very gimmicky with chromium, foil, and lenticular covers though. Image and Marvel had huge print runs for all of the main titles (and even most of the bad ones too) and most of those books ended up in quarter boxes a year later and are probably still sitting there to this day.

Not so much limited, just gluttoning up the market. Once Image paved the way, everybody was getting in on the game. Of course then Marvel/DC had to respond and the market, basically, imploded on itself. Shops were stuck trying to move product and were selling for pennies on the dollar. Pretty soon, the same thing can happen to the steelbook market....although I hope not.
