Star Wars is intended for younger audiences, but it's suitable for all ages. It always has been. Nothing changed with the Prequels, which in many ways were even darker and more serious than the OT, which had a rather simplistic view of things to begin with which was a big part of the charm for adults I think. The Prequels are more complex in the end and adult oriented in the end. The Clone Wars series probably did more for children getting into Star Wars than the films.
