You already know the answer. Why risk it. Situations like this your just asking for trouble. Seems to easy for some kind of screw up to happen, ie. they detest the warranty since it's been changed, you fight them over policy and now your PS3 is put on even longer backlog to go through administrative paperwork to determine what is to be done while you frantically e-mail and attempt to call and contact someone. Or you don't get the drive back and no one there knows what happened to it, ect...
I personally wouldn't risk it, but then I've played with fire time and time again...
