Because films are made for a CIH setup. Meaning that a 2.35:1 film will take up more screen space then a 1.85:1 for what it is designed to be shown in. Films are not made for you tv screens, they are made for cinemas. Batman begins is 2.40:1 as are all the transformers films except a few small sequence in the second film which where shoot in imax and thus where 1.44:1. Why don't more film shoot in imax? Because it is not an easy process and very few locations can truly take advantage of it, to the point that even when you do shoot in imax you have to shoot with a safe zone so that it can be shown in whatever the rest of the films aspect ratio is (usually 2.40:1), so the extra screen release estate is there to be more immersing but is cannot be made essential to the experience.
