I'm a bit baffled by the big deal EU fans make out of this, and I say this as I guy who grew up reading and enjoying a lot of the novels and comics (in fact, I'm going through and re-reading a lot of it right now!). As much as I enjoy a lot of the EU,
I absolutely do not want Episode VII to have to fit it in with the stories and events of those books-- for one thing, Chewbacca wouldn't even be able to be in the film!
The whole idea of "canon" in a fictional series is all in your head anyway. Just think of the old EU as an alternate storyline (I refer to it now as the "Legends" continuity). In fact, this fixes all of the massive continuity problems with the Clone Wars cartoon and the Clone Wars comics from Dark Horse. Now, the comics are the events of the clone wars in the "Legends" canon, and the cartoon is the "Disney" canon or whatever you want to call it.
