All players know the deal, that is why signing bonuses are such a huge deal. If the contracts were guaranteed then they won't even exist.

Yep. Which is why in the NFL, "deal length" is almost meaningless. As all players, after signing bonuses, are really only playing under a series of 1-year deals, since the deal can end at any time, for any number of reasons.
I can't blame the players, especially big "wear & tear" positions like linemen and RB's, for having a "get what you can, while you can" attitude. As their prime earning window is only a few years.
