Phoenix is a good actor but his humour and sensibility seems more at home in the indie sector. He doesn't have the lightness of RDJ and I don't think he'll appeal to a mainstream audience in the same way Marvel's other leads do, all of whom have a vaguely similar appeal. And though I'm sure the money appeals, I really can't see Phoenix being happy in the long term.
I mean, Marvel are smart enough to have earned some trust in this regard so hopefully they're aware of all that and it fits with their vision. But recent experiences with Edward Norton, Edgar Wright and a few others suggest that they're not immune to such errors.

I think He will do just fine playing Doctor Strange. People weren't so sure about Robert Downey Jr playing Iron Man 'Tony Stark', when he was cast to play that part and look at how well that had turned out
