Myself, and my sons, deal with the lack of good education with the generation coming up - even though my kids are grown, and on their own.
I'm a senior manager, at a computer firm. I have a real shortage of truly educated engineers, that can handle both technology, and simple written communications. They're out there - but the numbers are shrinking.
My sons are military officers. They have a shortage of well educated recruits - that can handle the increasing technical and logistical needs of active-duty military service. They have strong teams - but it's harder to get new people who know what they're doing, or can learn new things.
It's really strange to them, as they did quite well in school, and (after searching around) went to excellent public schools, and finally to West Point. But those numbers are shrinking, too, as teachers get paid a pittance for going through four or five years of education just to get a teaching credential. The best of them often go elsewhere for work, due to the low pay.
Something's got to give, at some point. I don't have kids in public schools, and see a real need to pay good teachers a good wage. It's good for everyone, even if they don't have kids at home.
