Velodyne is highly regarded as one of the best subwoofer companies in the business. They are highly known for their build quality and tight, controlled bass extension. Velodyne is one of the companies that pioneered active servo subs, taking real-time direct audio feedback from mics and actively adjusting the sub's output to reduce distortion. The DD-18 is a phenomenal sub, and the whole line is great down to the entry-level DPS Series.
I wouldn't buy a Velodyne sub below the DPS line though. What sort of budget are you working with? I would recommend determining your budget and then find the best you can at that level. Companies I'd check out include Velodyne, Paradigm, Hsu Research, Def Tech, NHT, Outlaw Audio, or Thiel. The key is to audition several subs in order to determine what truly appeals to you. Just remember that subs are better felt than heard. They shouldn't be boomy or muddy sounding, there shouldn't be any audible port noise, and you shouldn't be able to audibly locate the sub with your eyes closed.
