I'm not sure if they've changed the recipe for the protective coating, but there have been reports of using different coating types on BD for a long time. I have noticed some newer BDs scratch a lot easier. At one time you could hardly scratch the disc's read surface with anything shy of a sharp piece of metal. But, I've run across several that act more like DVDs when cleaning in recent months.
