It's too early to talk about a successor to HEVC. With the explosion of streaming media I expect the gap will be a couple of years shorter than the gap between H.264 and HEVC. But still...many years away.
In the meantime it would be worth paying attention to Xiph Daala which is a departure from DCT-based codecs. Depending on how it performs it may suggest the direction that future JVT codecs take.
