Default LG announces combo BD burner and HD DVD reader

OK, let's spread the universality around in here too:

LG ELECTRONICS UNVEILS NEW SUPER MULTI BLUE DUAL-FORMAT DRIVE AT INTERNATIONAL CES

Quote:
The GGW-H10N is compatible with both Blu-ray Discs and HD-DVD formats. The Super Multi Blue drive is compatible with Blu-ray Disc, DVD, CD read/write and HD-DVD-ROM (read), offering consumers with the most universal unit available.
The GGW-H10N can record up to 50GB of data, equivalent to 4-1/2 hours of high-definition video or 22 hours or standard definition video (on a dual layer 50GB BD-R/BD-RE recordable media). Surpassing the market standard, LG is providing a 4x recording speed of Blu-ray Discs, which means that it takes only 23-24 minutes to burn a full single layer BD-R disc (25GB), compared with 46-47 minutes for conventional 2x recording.
The product will be released during the first quarter of 2007, priced under US $1,200.

Default The Power of UNIVERSAL Studios...and Microsoft.

This is what it has come too!! This shows how 1 movie studio (UNIVERSAL) can cause so much disparity and confusion. And Microsoft's DIRECT SUPPORT of HD-DVD is clearly an ANTI-SONY move, especially when OS / Product support of both can only benefit the company's core business. My observation is since there are NO HD-DVD Burners (as of 12/2006), it's amazing that BLU-RAY is getting so much of flack. IMHO, IF Blu-Ray wanted to end this war QUICKLY, Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2, 3 Disney Films (The Incredibles, Finding Nemo, Cars) and the STAR WARS Movies would have been available, and would have dispatched HD-DVD to an early Hi-Def Grave, with a quickness! Oh well...like DVD-R/RW and DVD+R/RW, this will end when one INEXPENSIVE Burner drive (under $200) is available.

Food For Thought: The IRONY of HD-DVD is that Toshiba was a partner for the PS3, and since they have rights to the Cell Processor, it's only a matter of time for an HD-DVD / Cell Device be made available (heard it here first)

This belongs in the Drives section, not recorders...

Intriguing product though - much more interesting than a dual set top player IMHO.

Default LG's Super Multi Blue GGW-H10N: a Blu-ray writer and HD DVD reader for the PC

LG's Super Multi Blue GGW-H10N: a Blu-ray writer and HD DVD reader for the PC

LG is all over the dual-format optical game this next week. In addition to the HD DVD + Blu-ray combo player they just announced, they also touting a new Super Multi Blue dual-format drive for PCs. Not only will the GGW-H10N playback your Blu-ray Disc, DVD, CD, and HD DVD media, it'll also record -- yes record -- up to 50GB of data to dual-layer BD-R/BD-RE media. You also get 4x recording to 25GB single-layer BD-R discs -- doubling the industry's standard rate. The drive is also the first to support "SecurDisc" technology co-developed with Nero. That gives you the ability to secure your burns with password encryption, digital signature, checksum integrity checker for sharing data securely and with peace of mind. Expect the new drive to ship before March in the US for about $1,200 -- a worthwhile, convenience premium when compared to purchasing a $760 dual-layer Blu-ray burner and $199 Xbox 360 HD DVD drive (and all appropriately applied magic) separately. No pictures yet (that's their older, Blu-ray burner pictured) but will slap one up as soon LG sees fit to release them.

Just curious, why do the pictures on this site omit the HD DVD logo that LG is putting on it's dual format players? Legal reasons? Copyright infringement? Just an observation after clicking on the recorders tab at the top of the page. Yes, I did note that the above picture on this thread was the older Blu Ray burner.

A great Blu-ray player/recorder, a crappy HD DVD player. The drive doesn't support HD DVD's interactive features.

Default Hardware v Software

A bare drive niether supports nor lacks support for HDi (aka iHD). That's software.

Does the software that ships with it support HDi? If so, what is it? Is there third party software that supports HDi? If so, what is it? (I would suspect HP ships software that supports HDi, but I've not bothered to track it down.)
