Default Need a 5.1 speaker set recommendation

Need center channel, front speakers, front surround speakers, and subwoofer. The rear speakers are built into the walls. I need something that will fill a very large, open room (probably 25x40 ft).

Bookshelf speakers would be ideal for the front. Would be pairing them with this receiver: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...=ATVPDKIKX0DER

Under $400 would be ideal.

To be honest, with a room that size, $400 won't cut it. Just a sub that can fill that room (2 would be way better) is gonna be more than $400. Hope I'm wrong for you though. This is the point where building up with time might be worth considering.

Well this is for my parents and they aren't quite the audiophiles that most of us are. They do have an old pair of Paradigm MSE's that, after researching online, are actually suppose to be pretty great speakers. I currently don't have a working receiver here so I cannot test them, but they are in mint condition.

OK gotcha. Well first thing first, try out those Paradigm, but no reason why they'd be anything other than great. Than maybe try to match them with a center (though in this case not really important as much).

And then they were 3.1

Hahaha. Does matching brands of speakers really matter? I know some people live by it, but I would think with all the calibration options available that it wouldn't matter too much.

That is a large room, but how much if it will only be used for the viewing part?

When you mentioned that the rear speakers are built into the wall, are you saying those are the ones on the 40ft length or the 25ft length wall?

so far, and this depends on the layout, but those rear speakers just might not be used, unless you setup the seating starting from the rear, and only use about 17ft infront of the rear speakers.

any other way and I could not imagine sitting about 9-10feet from the screen and my rear speakers being 15feet behind me or 30feet behind me.

Those in-wall speakers about 20 ft away from the display, and the main seating is between them and the display. However, there is more distant viewing happening about 30 ft away at the kitchen and bar area. This area would obviously not benefit from the rear speakers as they are firing towards the TV. Not a big deal though. I just want to make sure the front ones are strong enough to make it to the back area.

Perhaps you can find some gems on audiogone and or craigslist. Don't forget to check your local pawn shops. Your $400 budget will go a lot further if you do not mind used equipment.

Since you are handy have you considered building some speakers? Your money will deff go far if you consider building them.

In such a large room, wouldn't it be better to get towers and not bookshelf, at least for the two front speakers?

I agree if that works it would be a great way to go. I see old school towers being used as fronts. That would fill that room with sound. It would also physically fill the room. J/k. This would be pretty easy to do using craigslist.
