You read right, folks!
I got my first PS3 last Friday (aka my first Blu player)!!! ![]() Have not been able to hook it up via Component Video yet, but will shortly. My HDMI belongs to my upcoming Arcam DV-135 standard DVD player. Jodi |

Yes use the PS3 it will upscale now. No need to get the other player. The PS3 will be much faster too.

After I got my PS3, I hardly ever use my old DVD player - PS3 plays standard DVD better especially with the upscale in the latest firmware release.
I am not a gamer and PS3 allow me to dabble into different game demos aside from watching great movies. ![]() |

The PS3, for me, will be primarily a gaming machine. I am quite an avid gamer, as I have the GameCube, a PS2, a Dreamcast, and an old XBOX as well. Believe it or not, I don't have an XBOX 360....yet. I will dare say that the PS3 does, can, and will run circles around the XBOX 360. The only game I currently have on PS3 is "Dragon's Lair" (the BD-J version of the 1983 laserdisc game), and it's a near-perfect translation! Soon I will get "Resistance: Fall of Man", as I am a sucker for FPS's. Also look forward to Soul Calibur 4, as I love that fighting franchise. I currently own Sony's KDL-V32XBR2 32" LCD, and it is very well (ISF) calibrated. It is fabulous, though it has only one HDMI input. I currently own about 600 DVDs and 8 BDs. Both my DVD and BD count will continue to rise steadily throughout the rest of the year and beyond. My DVD collection will primarily rise through the addition of TV series collections as well as animated TV series collections. My "call" is two-fold: first, I will get my first BD stand-alone, Sony's BDP-S300 (ISF calibrated), in November or December when the price drops on it. It would enable me to use far better interconnects (HDMI or Component Video, as well as coaxial digital out) than the PS3 would. Good interconnects are actually more important than the equipment you buy. Second, a standard DVD player like Arcam's DV-135 (with it ISF calibrated) will produce near film-quality images and the best looking standard DVD this side of, let's say, Ayre Acoustics' DX-7e DVD transport or D-1Xe DVD/CD player. And the Arcam has stereo DVD-Audio and stereo SACD that, I'm sure, will run at least a few circles around the PS3's SACD capabilities. Thanks again for welcoming me to the Blu camp. Blu has lots more exciting potential than HD-DUD. ![]() Jodi |

You say your TV only has 1 HDMI input, this link might help. The product it is showing is a little bit overkill and expensive but it is a great start for you and you can find cheaper switches that will meet your needs
http://www.amazon.com/HM-501-5-PORT-.../dp/B000FHQMFK I really hope this helps you out. Oh yeah, the PS3 is IMO the best Blu-ray player out there and if you are looking for another BD player, I would suggest another PS3. Don't forget to upgrade the firmware, that is where you get all the real PS3 goodies. |

If you absolutely insist on spending that much money on an DVD player get the Samsung BDP1200 - it is a BD player yes, but it has the Reon HQV deinterlacer which is really good. Alternatively, you can save money and just get an Oppo as it'll provide comparable performance to the Samsung, and beat the arcam with its cables tied behind your back so to speak.
As far as interconnects go, with HDMI it's all digital which means that as long as the signal is getting through there is no issues. A $10 cable will perform as well as a $100 one as long as you get proper synch and no dropouts, which is easily detected. While component *can* provide performance that is as good as HDMI it's more susceptible to interference and you need good ADC/DACs in both ends. If you run component through a switching receiver that can also affect the signal in a bad way. |

It will be a night and day difference between the PS3 BD playback and the cheap BDP-S300 from Sony. Once you try the PS3 for BD playback it will be very difficult to use a standalone player because they are all so slow in comparison to the PS3. And the BDP-S300 doesn't come anywhere close to the PS3.
For HDMI cables check out Monoprice. I'm using around 20 HDMI cables from them with no problems. Their $5 cable works exactly the same as a $100 one from BB. I have no problem running 1080P with any of them. Last edited by aaronwt; 06-15-2007 at 01:50 PM. |
