Default Component vs HDMI in 1080I

Sorry for the newbish question but is there any distiguishable difference between the component cables and hdmi on a 1080i tv. Reason I ask is that my hdmi stopped working on the bd30 for some reason and I really dont want to buy a new player just yet.

In theory they should be about the same. For me, HDMI looks better, but only because I have horrible ground loop problems. Plug in the component cables and see what happens. If it looks fine, then why worry.

If you have a good set of cables, then component should look about the same at 1080i. You would be able to get 1080p over you component video cables if it weren't for the copy protection limitations imposed on the players.

Could you have accidentally changed the output setting from HDMI to another one?

You just have to try it out on your set.

On mine, HDMI looks better, especially for games, but I always hear different responses to this question.

oops, accidentally deleted my reply to this, here's what it said:

component will have information loss from the player to the tv because of the Digital to analog to digital conversion, but that loss is minute and most people can't even see the difference, so whichever looks better to YOU is the one you should use. If the component looks the same/better to you, go ahead with that and don't bother replacing the player.

I actually think it might be my media receiver for my pioneer plasma tv as I tried plugging in my DVR and get the same thing. HDCP is broken me thinks.
