I'm totally sold on Blu Ray, so that's not what I'm asking here but...
Since going to Blu in my home, DVD just doesn't cut it anymore. I do notice a difference in picture quality while watching DVDs on my 16" PC while traveling. Is Blu Ray really worth it and a major upgrade from DVD if I'm watching on a 16" laptop? I'm thinking about getting a Dell or Sony that includes a Blu Ray drive because my current Toshiba doesn't have the specs to be able to just use an external Blu Ray drive. |

Blu ray is worth every penny an upgrade from dvd, but it would be most beneficial on a large screen 1080p LCD/Plasma. I saw the blu ray on a laptop over a dvd and the PQ was barely noticeable if at all because the screen is small.

Blu-ray and laptops - yes!
Viewing distance and display resolution matter. 1920x1200 and 1920x1080 displays can be found on laptops. At the nominal viewing distance on nearly any laptop(22 inches), it is ideal for watching High Definition - this includes Blu-ray. I have two laptops with 1920x1200 displays. What many people miss or fail to take into consideration is the viewing distance. Many people try to compare while thinking the laptop will be at 8-10 feet away. At that distance, the laptop is a postcard... no there would be no difference. Watching a Blu-ray on one of my 17" 1920x1200 laptops @ 22" is directly comparable to a 70" HDTV at 8 feet. The fatrher away you get, the less the difference will become. 1080p is 1080p... what matters is watching it at the proper distance. ![]() The 16.4" FW Series VAIO with the 1920x1080 display would be great!
