Default How much will Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs make for the 5 day holiday?

The easy question would be What will be number one this weekend, but I want to make it a little harder. Remember that Ice Age will have the kiddie factor big time going for it. It's also a holiday weekend in the US so many will be off work for Friday. Also Ice Age has the benefit of higher ticket prices for the 3D screenings.

So how much will Ice Age 3D make for the 5 day Wednesday - Sunday? How will the top 5 stack up? Will Transformers repeat at number 1? Place your bets!!!

For reference I will add that the first two made:
Ice Age $46 million in 3 days opening
Ice Age 2 $68 million in 3 days opening.

This one is 5 days with a holiday (no work) thrown in.

I think people have wisened up to the fact that these Ice Age movies are....less and less impressive every time out....MUCH less impressive. I HIGHLY doubt it will pull even close to 60 mil in 5 days, especially with Transformers 2 still another option for families. As for what movie will be tops? That I think is up for discussion since Depp has a large box office pull and Public Enemies is a rather highly anticipated film for what it is. Either way, even if they aren't as family friendly as Ice Age 3, those two movies will be such a huge pull this weekend that I doubt Ice Age 3 will be able to compete to such a friendly tune as many are predicting.

If last weekend had Transformers pulling in over 100 mil and everything else only pulled in under 20 mil as a result of that...

...what makes you think that two movies, sure to pull in at least 50 mil each, would leave much money for people in this economy (even if it is a holiday weekend) to spend on a movie that's sure to be lackluster entertainment such as Ice Age 3, even if it is more family friendly?

My impersonation of the family at the theater:

"so, what should we see kids? Transformers 2 or Ice Age 3?"

Kids: "Meh, I didn't like Ice Age 2, it was boring. Lets see Transformers!"

Parents: "Yeah, we'll go see a better family friendly movie in a couple weeks when the new Harry Potter comes out."

I'm going to guess $381,647,259.33 here in the United States. That's just a ballpark figure. Give or take a few dollars.

'Transformers' looks unstoppable
'Ice Age,' 'Public Enemies' not likely to topple behemoth
I'll say $65 million. Transformers seems poised to take the crown again.

Quote:
The 'bots are still on the trot.

The mega-successful bow last week by Paramount's action sequel "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" has so transformed the competitive landscape, it's hard to see either of two rival tentpoles opening at No. 1 this weekend.

Just a few weeks ago, Fox's 3D animated three-quel "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs" seemed to have a shot at debuting atop the Fourth of July weekend rankings. But despite continued prospects of a healthy bow, it's highly unlikely "Dawn" will capture session bragging rights.

Like Universal's Johnny Depp starrer "Public Enemies," "Dawn" breaks wide Wednesday. But its real industry showdown will come this weekend, as the Independence Day holiday falling on Saturday means boxoffice rankings will be based on a three-day span.

Comparing the Fox opener to its 800-pound holdover rival on that basis, "Dawn" should open in the $45 million-$50 million range, while Par's Michael Bay blockbuster could get enough of a boost from the boxoffice-friendly holiday to keep its soph-session drop to a modest 50%. That would give it a Friday-Sunday tally of $55 million or more this session.

Playing in 3,319 locations, "Enemies" looks likely to ring up $25 million over the weekend and perhaps $40 million for its first five days. "Dawn" is set for a record 1,606 3D auditoriums, with a total of 3,993 opening playdates and 4,093 engagements starting Friday; its five-day projection hovers at $60 million-$65 million.

I went with 110-120mil for the 5-day total, thats if it pulls in the kid crowd big, if not, it could make substantially less.

Top 5 will be

Revenge of the Fallen
Ice Age
Public Enemies
The Proposal
The Hangover

'Ice' freezes 'Transformers'
Fox film grosses $14 mil on its opening day

The weekend race will be between Ice Age 3 and Transformers. The financial prospects for Public Enemy are good, but it will be third. From variety.com:

Quote:
In a stellar opening, 20th Century Fox's 3-D toon "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs" grossed $14 million as it opened Wednesday in 3,993 theaters at the domestic B.O., according to early estimates.
"Dawn of the Dinosaurs" stomped past Paramount's monster performer "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" for the day, although "Transformers 2" still turned in an impressive performance in its 8th day in release.

Early estimates showed "Transformers 2" grossing $10 million for a domestic cume of nearly $240 million.

Universal's Johnny Depp topliner "Public Enemies" also got off to a promising start as it unspooled Wednesday. The period gangster pic, directed by Michael Mann, grossed north of $8 million, according to early estimates.

"Dawn of the Dinosaurs" and "Public Enemies" opened mid-week in order to get a jump on the long July 4th holiday weekend.

Box office observers still won't call the weekend race, saying it could be either "Transformers 2" or "Ice Age 3."

I think Revenge of the Fallen takes the weekend (and the 5-day probably) easily
