Default The Thing Blu-ray (1982) extras?

One of my favorite thriller flicks is playing now in HD on Direct-TV which made me realize this must be out on blu-ray so off to amazon.com i went until i saw this user comment:
http://www.amazon.com/Thing-Blu-ray-...rBy=addOneStar
Saying that the USA blu-ray version has many extras missing.

Well the uk version:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Thing-Blu-ra...f=cm_cd_t_pb_t
is 108 min long and the USA version is 109 mins long.

Am i blind or something because i have not read about any extras anywhere.

Unfortunately, the excellent "Terror Takes Shape" documentary is chopped up and used as a spotty U-Control device. But the commentary from the DVD remains intact.

The UK edition contains the same version of the film as the US with no cuts but it also contains all the special features from the DVD in their original format and its region free.

U-control generally just sucks no matter what release its on, Universal breaks up featurettes and docs and places them in various intervels during the movie. that may work for some but i personally hate it and would prefer one long doc or at least a play all button that shows the clips full screen

As for the Thing, i too was pissed that the doc was cut up and almost didn't buy the bluray, but the amazing PQ and AQ drew me in and i have to say i'm happy with my purchase and anyone who loves the movie would be happy to own this on blu

You can include me in the U-Control haters club. I truly don't understand why people want home media to be interactive.

I can understand some interactivity - like during the movie being able to quickly pull up IMDB stats on one of the actors, or something like that (which is being tested now).

But to chop up a perfectly fine documentary, and make it confusing and difficult to access and watch, is just plain dumb.

Also, to make this documentary inaccessible to those with profile 1.0 players is simply unforgivable and insulting.

Universal US also did the same thing with King Kong (2005) and U-571. I guess Uni wanted to "showcase" the "power" of Blu-ray DIsc. Instead, people who bought the Blu-ray Disc felt cheated, annoyed, and for many new users of Blu-ray: confused.

Yeah, the splicing of features to add false interactivity is my real problem. Pulling up features during a movie is cool, as long as you can freely select which features you wish to use.

I was hoping u-control would have faded out by now, but it still seems to be universals big bluray selling point, which is a shame because it doesn't seem like real movie fans enjoy it that much

Also does anyone else hate universals standard menu system on all their releases. I like to see themed pop up menus that relate to the movie. no matter if it's hellboy, king kong or knocked up, universal always just gives us the same boring menu system that pops in from the left side

ok rant over

Its the same menu system from their HD DVD products, just now instead of Red, the menu has Blue.

U-Control is a nice idea for stuff like this:

- Picture-in-picture commentaries
- Script-to-screen comparisons
- Storyboard/art-to-screen comparisons
- Unsused interviews
- Trivia information

Its not a good idea to use it to present documentaries or featurettes. If you are going to do that, take a note from Fox. Young Frankenstein's picture-in-picture footage is viewable either during the film (for Profile 1.1/2.0 players) or you can watch the segment you want from the menu or you can watch them all at once.

Is the picture quality any better on the UK version? I've avoided upgrading from the HD-DVD because its PQ is so nice, and I read so much about the softened PQ on the USA BD.

Thanks,
Doug

Thats my point..it's always the same, why not allow the individual DVD producers to give the menu a theme that reflects the movie. Every other studio doesn't have that rule, Disney/PIXAR somewhat uses a similar layout for all it's menus, but they at least have an individual theme or colour pattern to them that relates to the movie you are watching

It's not an big issue that retracts from me buying universal titles, i just find it strange and somewhat impersonal while watching a movie

A friend of mine thinks that The Thing is the best catalog Blu-ray out there, but he is a massive fan of the movie like myself. I truly think it looks fantastic for its age and genre. For me, it was like I was watching the thing for the first time (except I wasn't scrunched down hiding my eyes in a theater seat). I saw this in the theater as a kid. If you are a fan of horror, it should be your first purchase.

It's in my top 10. I LOVE this movie. It looks and sounds great as well. I wish it had more extras but it does have a great commentary track.

I actually caught a few minutes of it on MAXhd I think, and my wife was like "wow it looks great" and then requested the BD, which I told her had great reviews

MacReady is my personal Jim Morrison.

AND I think this movie truly deserves the BD stellar treatment it got, because it's one of the greatest movies of all the time.
