Default Onkyo TX-SR607 vs Pioneer VSX-1019AH

I apologize if this thread has been done 100 other times, but I really need some expertise from the individuals at blu-ray.com!

I'm about to pull the trigger on my first receiver and have been going back and forth between the two brands. I have used a million resources (CNET, AVS, etc.) and I'd really like to hear just from people who own the systems.

I'm planning on just building my audio system slowly, as I have a 46" Samsung LCD and a PS3 as well. I've purchased two front speakers to start (Polk Monitor 50's) and plan on adding the rest at a later date.

I like the iPod/iPhone and GUI interface features on the Pioneer, and I also like how the Onkyo has the 6 HDMI inputs. I'm looking for a receiver that I can use for years to come, and I appreciate any of your feedback.

I say the Pioneer. It is 120 Watts with all channels driven vs the Onkyo at 90 watts with only 2 channels driven ( I realize these figures may be a bit bloated for both, but I believe the Pioneer's to be very close to what their specs state when all channels are driven). Now this is just my opinion, but I had an Onkyo and now a Pioneer, and I feel the Pioneer just sounds less processed in its sound, thus resulting in a richer and cleaner sound. I am a big fan of MCACC, Pioneer's calibration set-up. Audyssey is excellent too, but I have liked the add'l features that come with MCACC in setting up the receiver. Furthermore, I believe the Onkyo amps run too hot IMO, as compared to the Pioneers. Lastly, the Onkyo does have more HDMI-inputs, but I personally do not have that much equipment where I would need to hook up 5 HDMI-inputs to the receiver, so this point would be mute for me.

Thanks alot for the information. I'm actually leaning more towards the Pioneer as well. I was also comparing the 1019 with the 919 and think that I might save the money and go with the 919. I'm really in no need of the upscaling, and it only has 3 HDMI inputs as opposed to the 4 on the 1019. All in all, I don't think I can go wrong with either choice.

I'm also kind excited about the iPhone support as well, seems pretty cool.

If you want to build up your system slowly, keep in mind that the 1019 does not have pre-out support. This limits you because you can not pair it with an external amp in the future. I own both a 1019 and a Marantz SR-5002. The 5002 which is a few years older supports pre-outs while the 1019 does not which means if I plan on purchasing larger speakers in the future that can handle more than the 120 watts the Pioneer offers, I have to use the older Marantz with an external amp and the pioneer (which I payed more for) gets pushed aside.

If you're looking at spending the money on a receiver that you want to use for many years and plan on slowly upgrading your components around it, get something with pre-outs.
