Default Does a Panny Plasma degrate sound w/ Optical Out.

This is a half TV, half audio question. I'm hooking up my PS3 to my TV, 42" Panny, then using the optical out to go to the receiver.

Will the TV downgrade the audio to 2.0 this way, or will the TV just pass it through?

Also should I run PCM, or be bitstreaming, to have the PS3 do all the decoding and just send the audio to a receiver which can't read blu-ray codecs...

I take it you mean "Downmix" not downgrade. If you do then no it doesn't downmix the audio. As long as the TV is recieving a 5.1 feed (eg: Freesat BBC HD in the UK) then it will pass this signal directly to the reciever.

If your recieverer cannot read Blu-ray codecs and you bitstream the signal you will not hear any sound at all. You will need the PS3 to do the decoding.

i just looked up the manual online for my set PZ5080U and this is what the manual says

When sound is output using “DIGITAL AUDIO OUT” of this
unit, the system switches to 2CH audio
.

so looks like 2.0 is what you will be receiving if using an optical cable from your tv to receiver. check online for your specific tv though

also set your PS3 to PCM, unless you have the PS3 Slim. The PS3 (FATTY) cannot send hd codecs via bitstream only PCM, however the new PS3 slim can bitstream

My bro has the PS3 slim, so technically it shouldn't matter correct?

And thanks, looks like I'll have to go from the PS3 straight to the receiver and do something else for TV sound...

I just switched it from the TV to the receiver coming out of the PS3, total night and day difference. It was only a crappy DVD for him, but HUGE difference, he's going to buy some blu-rays now..

Thanks Guys.
