Need a new receiver - Blu-ray Forum

I am definitely looking into getting a new receiver. I got my cousins old surround sound from a while ago that was sitting in my aunts basement, and the receiver doesn't have HDMI or anything. Right now it's a Sony STR-K750P.

Would like to spend no more than $300 as I am 16 and don't have a job other than modifying 360's and selling custom cases/controllers lol.

For your budget I would look at THIS Pioneer or THIS Onkyo. For $30 more THIS Pioneer is well worth the extra cash. Also, what speakers are you running? Are they speakers that came with the receiver? If so you need to check to make sure that they are 8ohm speakers.

Yeah they all match and everything is Sony so I am fairly sure it was a bundle. I have a JBL sub but don't really need both hooked up so I might just sell it.

But how can I check if they are 8ohm? The model of the speakers is SS-MSP75.

Look on the back of the speakers for the info. It should state the watts and the ohms. If they are 8ohm speakers you will be fine, but if they say 6ohm or anything else you will need to replace the speakers. A lot of home theater in a box solutions have speakers rated for 6ohms and sometimes 3ohms. The receiver that comes with them is designed to run those speakers. If you connect them to a more standard receiver it can result in a fire.

My old Pioneer HTIB warned of this because there was some sort of fail safe built into the speakers and the instructions warned to never connect them to a receiver other than the one they came with. Doing so could result in a fire it said. Some HTIB's will have standard 6ohm speakers, but this is still a problem for a lot of receivers that aren't designed to run them. Even though some receivers are 6ohm stable they don't output enough to drive the speakers properly and if you turn the volume up too much you may fry the receiver.

Aside from that, you will want new speakers even if the ones you have are 8ohm because you are going to want an improved sound. There's no need to replace the receiver and keep HTIB speakers. Sony doesn't make great speakers anyhow. Since you are budget minded and I'm assuming that you like smaller speakers you should probably invest in THIS set of Energy speakers for $199.99 shipped. They will sound a world better than those Sony's. What JBL sub do you have? Its probably better than the Sony that came with that setup.

Yeah it says nothing on the speakers, which is why I asked. I figured it would say something, but it didn't.

And the JBL is 200 watts but no idea on the model.

So why does this have all the extra stuff and how would I hook one or both up? I have a Y cable male to male that it came with, but not sure how it was hooked up.

Since the speakers have no identifying marks I would advise you not to connect them to another receiver. My advise would be to get the $189.99 Pioneer receiver that I pointed you to and the $199.99 Energy speaker package. You can use that JBL sub. The connector that says LFE is where you connect from your new receiver. Don't even bother with the Sony sub. For $400 you can have a much better sounding setup than what you are using now. Oh, and with that Y-cable you will only need to connect one of them to the LFE and not connect the other one. The other end of the cable will connect to the sub output on your new receiver.

Yeah I will probably just get a whole new setup for Christmas or if I somehow get random money out the ass like I seem to do sometimes..

Isn't there a way I could test the ohms or something with a multimeter or anything? My dad's a carpenter and has everything you could think of..

I would imagine that you could use a multimeter to test the resistance. I've never done it myself though. Be sure to test all of them though. Sometimes the speakers are not identical in those packages. The center channel may differ from the front two or maybe the rears are different, so be sure to check them all.

I hooked it up to that LFE and still no luck. Why does it have so many ports on it compared to the other sub?

Some subs have these features that allow you to connect the speakers through it and use its crossover feature. You don't need to concern yourself with them though. To use this sub you can take one end of the cable and plug it into the LFE on the sub and the other end and plug it into the sub output on the receiver. Set the gain on the sub to around the halfway mark. If you are using the y-cable and you don't get any sound using one of the plugs then switch to the other plug.

I tried that, and it didn't work. However, the single end on the Y cable doesn't go into the Sub out very well. It can't go any farther and is a pain to get out, but it doesn't seem to go all the way into the receiver.

Btw - I'm not dumb by any means, I just am not too familiar with home audio and such. Which is why I am asking for suggestions on receivers.
