Default Backup Utility vs. Data Transfer Utility

What is the main difference between the two?

1) I understand that Backup Utility doesnt transfer "copyrighted" data, correct?
a) In other words, just certain game saves? or is there other "copyrighted" data too?
b) Is there anyway to find out which game saves wont get transferred?
2) What other differences are there between the the two?

3) Does the PS3 Backup Utility take up an entire HD no matter how big it is? (i.e. does the hard drive become unusable for anything else while it has the PS3 backup)

4) Anything else I should know about either Utility?

I know that the Data Transfer is for when you want to move ALL of your info including all copyrighted data to a new system, i.e. FAT to SLIM. I had to do it when I bought my Slim last fall. The transfer process can take awhile depending on the data to be transferred.

The Back-Up utility is just that a back-up. All data will be copied to another portion of the drive minus some copyrighted data. Depending on your HD drive size & the size of the info to be backed-up will dictate how much free space you have left on your HD. Or you can do a back-up to any external as well.

The backed up stuff can be put on a different PS3 if this one dies though? or no?

I would say yes seeing you can save the info on an external drive & then pull that info off of the external drive when you need it. But only the non-copyrighted data.

The copyright data won't be a issue if you're backing data up to put back on to the same console (replacing the PS3's HDD).

Absolutely, it's only an issue when you want to transfer all your info to a new PS3 with a new HDD. I think that's why in one of the firmware updates Sony gave us the data transfer utility between two PS3s via Cat5 cable.
