Default always run surround?

ok I think I have decided on a receiver but I have seen where people only use the surround during movies and I want it all of the time cause even the tv shows I watch support 5.1 so is this gonna wear my receiver out faster or will it be fine?

BTW I have decided on the Yamaha rx-v465

I use mine all the time. Can't imagine using TV speakers at this point. Especially since we mainly watch HD shows which come in 5.1 DD many times. Nothing to worry about as long as you aren't pushing it to the max 24/7.

Yeah, like aramis said, I use mine all the time as well. Going back to TV speakers at this point would be almost painful. And since my 6-year-old can operate the system with the Harmony remote, it's all good.

As for wearing things out, I used my old receiver all the time for about 2 years, and it was still going strong when I sold it. I don't think there's anything to worry about.

i'm not sure why you would think that but no. it's designed to operate 5.1 or 7.1 speakers, all the time if need be. you'll be fine! if it was a danger to the receiver, they would legally be required to put that information on the box, and in the manual to get the UL listing, which they probably wouldn't get because of the potential danger to consumers.

go ahead, run all those speakers and live life!

I use my 5 channels as well for Tv viewing, and sometimes I matrix the sound into all 7 channels with sports to make it feel as if I am in the crowd during the game.....

I haven't used TV speakers in 22 years! They're useless. Your receiver will be fine!

One thing I forgot to mention, is to make sure that your receiver has plenty of "breathing room". Even if it's not running full power, it will still get hot, so you want to make sure it has enough space around it to dissipate the heat. I made that mistake once, a long time ago, and won't do it again.
