Question What makes one player better than another?

What makes one BD player better? The prices are so much differant.. But don't they all just do the same thing? The prices I've seen go from $78 - $5000.

Some decode the audio, some don't, etc... but I think what you're really trying to ask, is "What is the difference between a player with the latest profile, and features for $250-$300, and one that is $5,000"

And the answer to that question is, in the components used, build quality, etc.....

Will the $5,000 player offer better audio/video..... I would say "Yes" Although due to the diminishing returns, I wouldn't personally buy a $5,000 player.... but the $500 Oppo is on my "To Buy" list... that's for sure.

In their review of the Oppo BDP-83, Home Theater Magazine compared it with the $4500 Denon. They basically said that the video was just as good, but the Denon's audio was a little better. I doubt seriously though that it was $4000 better. I got the Oppo two weeks ago, and am loving it! $4500 BD players are for people with more money, than they know what to do with. That ain't me!

The $4500 Denon player: http://www.usa.denon.com/ProductDetails/4760.asp

I looked back, and see I made a mistake.
It wasn't the review of the Oppo. It was the review of the Denon. Here is a quote from the review, about the video:
Quote:
"The OPPO offers much faster disc access and loading times, and its video processing and video performance over HDMI with BD and DVD are on par with the very best players I’ve seen at any price, including this Denon."
It also said the audio of the Denon was much better, instead of a little better, as I said earlier. Sorry for the confusion, on my part. At $4500, I would hope the audio was better. But I still can't imagine it being $4000 better! That's just not me.

- the BD features could be different (BD-live, decoding DTS HD MA/DTHD, bitstreaming audio ...)
-the none BD features could be different ( better upscaler for DVDs, SACD/ DVD-A playback, netflix or other streaming....)
- the build quality (cheaper parts that cause more issues....)

then you have some more esoteric factors like
- quality control/service (more people working on issues so you get faster service when they arise, better testing of the device so you are less likely to get a lemon….)

and if it is an issue of price, then
- branding (let’s face it that happens with everything)
- quantity sold (let’s face it, if A sells 100 players and B 1M the company that sells 100 needs to make more on each of them in order to get even and pay everyone involved their salary)
- life span (if a new model just came out then the price on an older model drop

.....

I would stay away from the under $150 players myself. I've seen my dad go through three within 2 years and he even has a decent home theatre setup with room for them to breath. One was a Sony surprisingly.

What country are you in? I have not seen player in Canada that cost more $ 350 or under $100. Most start at $150 to $350 ..

They all 1080 P and same color bit .They all have HDMI port.

Some have USB port and some you can hook you computer to it.I have not seen any blu ray recorder here The blu ray recorders are $900 and up in Japan and there is no word when they are going start to make recorders in the US and Canada. I hear the UK may get recorders soon.

The big stop that is stoping recorders is the FCC do to copyright. Now it is hard to even record DVD do to some TV shows shut down the player .

You would think with HD video camera there would be a demad for blu ray recorder for computer.
