Default PS3 Bitstream question.

Currently my set up is

PS3 Slim -> HDMI -> AVR -> HDMI -> TV

AVR -> Speaker Cables -> 2 Floorstanding Speakers.

In the audio settings of the PS3 I currently have set to automatic which checks EVERYTHING, and I noticed my receiver during movies display the 5.1 digital diagram but only has my Left and Right channel squared (showing it's using it). But when I uncheck all the 5.1 / 7.1 Linear PCM options etc in the PS3, it now only shows the Left and Right channel squared without the rest of the 5.1 digital diagram.

I heard both and I think they sound the same, but just to make sure does it change anything to my audio when i play LinearPCM/DolbyHD/DTS-HD MA tracks?

And would it be okay to leave everything checked even though I only have a 2 channel setup, I shouldnt be losing any audio should I?

Thank you experts of blu-ray.com

did you instruct the Sony 820 receiver that you are only using two speakers? (R & L)

Do that first, then run the PS3 auto check again, it should limit you to 2.0 PCM.

By leaving the 5.1 and 7.1 settings you could be losing out on some of the audio.

....if you instruct the receiver to only have 2.0 and tell the PS3 you only have 2.0, it should donwmix the audio to 2.0 so you would not miss anything. Granted, dialogue will not be ideal without a center channel.

Thanks for the response and help. I'll go ahead and try to figure out how to make it only do 2.0

Run the auto-setup.

Hrmm so I set my receiver to just 2.0 under the speaker settings, but my PS3 still recommends everything checked.

So basically are you saying to uncheck everything except 2CH LPCM, and should I uncheck Dolby TrueHD / DTS HD Master Audio.

Also playing movies like Ratotuille has only 5.1 tracks under the audio options, I shouldnt be losing any audio playing the 5.1 LinearPCM track even though I only have a 2.0 set up right?

SOMETHING has to downmix to 2.0. Either the player or the receiver. As it stands now if your Sony is set to only 2.0 (through the auto-setup) the PS3 will send it the requisite 5.1/6.1/7.1 signal and it'll be downmixed into two-channel audio. You'll "lose" the extra channels but you won't lose any audio.

You could alternatively uncheck all speaker settings on the PS3 above 2.0 and let the player downmix. Don't uncheck the HD audio though.

can someone help me? Sometimes when i just want to use 3.1 audio out of my receiver i have to switch it Theatre Dimensional, all the other settings on my onkyo 706 send audio to all the speakers. Is this the correct way to listen to it if you only want sound out of your Fronts, center, and subwoofer????? When i have it in theatre dimensional, the sound is kinda Tinny or like concert hall e
