Thumbs down

i have seen this in a London store, it is in 2.35.1.not 2.20.1
This was shot in Todd-AO so not off 65mm elements, just the same as the DVD, dont no why they bother.

Probably because for the vast majority of people - myself included - just want a cleaned up, high definition of a movie they like. I'll leave the aspect ratio to scholars and Sight and Sound Magazine.

Mr Young makes a good point - it's not just the slight aspect ratio difference that is the problem, but the quality of the transfer if it has been mastered from a 35mm source. If Universal had gone back to the original large format elements, the picture quality would have been much better.

I screened this last night and it is better than the old dvd but could have been so much better from 65mm elements. Also no special features at all.
Re my earlier post, most people on this forum want the best possible available
elements to be used for transfers as the large format neg for this film would
on have not have been worn as some 65mm negs.
This did look fantastic in 70mm at the Odeon Leicester Square, and has not
been seen in that format as far as i know ever since.
Universal are the worst, maybe i should have keeped my 8mm cinemascope
Cinevision extract.

Robert Harris has said this was scanned from 65mm.

Ordered this from the hut, was only Ł3.95. Surprised at the price considering its a fairly new release, only a month old or so.

I see mr Harris does say he was told this was from from 65mm, he also says
in so many words the aspect ratio 2.35.1 on this disc is ok ? but why did they
crop the pic from 2.20.1 ?
As i said the pq is better than the DVD so who knows...

according to IMDB, this was filmed in 65mm and printed in 70mm.

It also says it was 2:20 : 1

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0065377/technical

and from wiki

"Films were shot on 65 mm negative and the images printed onto 70 mm print stock (5 mm larger to accommodate soundtracks) for projection. The aspect ratio of this format was 2.20:1."

I have all the Large Format movies on Blu including Magnificent Men, Grand
Prix and Battle of the Bulge. Also the last 2 plus Mutiny on the Bounty were
taken from 65mm and had a special 35mm interpositive but still have there
2.20.1 and 2.76.1 aspect ratios. Also why did Universal not put on the back of Airport taken from 65mm Elements.
Also for other 70mm fans a 70mm DTS (1.85) print of The Master was shown
at BAFTA a few weeks ago.Its 1.85 70mm because some parts were shot in
35mm.
Last week i also had a demo of Dolby Atmos at Dolbys new Theatre in Soho
Square it was fantastic. They have installed Dolby Atmos at the Empire, but pulled the film so now showing at the Vue in Dolby 7.1.

He doesn't say it's cropped. He's saying more width is shown than would have been projected due to scanning from 65mm negative prior to adding magnetic stripes.

Hi Douglas,
I know what Mr Harris says about masking the edges of the frame with the
Magnetic stripes but makes you wonder what we are missing from all 65mm
productions. l do know on the blow up print of lD4 for 70mm DTS they printed
the 2.35.1 picture as full 2.35.1 so if you made a special aperture plate you could project the complete picture.
Also NFT 1 on the southbank are showing 2001 in 70mm next month.

l have looked at the DVD again today with the Blu and this could be from a 65mm element, i did not notice before how much the old DVD was faded and the Blu was so much sharper.
It would be nice to have some information from Universal, but we all know about all there tinkering.
