do you have the PS3 slim set to bitstream? if not, it will decode it internally...

The PS3 doesn't support passing a Dolby TrueHD via. HDMI. I believe there is some built in function to output the channels but I don't know enough about it to comment on it. You shouldn't see a truehd icon on your receiver because the ps3 will be the one doing the decoding.

Here, found a quote via google:

Quote:
Your problem is that the PS3 actually does NOT support passing a Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD bitstream over HDMI to the receiver. The PS3 does include an on-board Dolby TrueHD decoder which converts TrueHD into multi-channel PCM and analog sound.

So if you want to take advantage of TrueHD with the PS3 and your receiver, then you actually have to set the Blu-Ray Disc audio output setting for HDMI (in the PS3's BD/DVD settings menu) to "PCM" instead of "bitstream." This will allow the PS3 to losslessly expand the Dolby TrueHD soundtrack into pure multi-channel PCM for decoding by your receiver. You will get better results that way than by sending a regular compressed Dolby Digital signal to the receiver as you are doing now.

Currently when you set the PS3's HDMI audio output to "bitstream," advanced audio codecs such as Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio are "truncated" to their "core" Dolby Digital and DTS components, thereby losing quite a bit of the audio data, which makes the sound quality suffer.

At some point in the future, the PS3 may support bitstream audio for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD - or at least on-board decoding of DTS-HD and conversion to PCM - but as of the latest 2.1 firmware upgrade, that feature is still not available.
Edit: added quote

Actually the PS3 slim will bitstream.

OP, you need to make sure the audio output priority is set to direct. if you are still having issues, please PM donRSD, he has one and can help you.

bitstream, which on sonys older blu-ray players and PS3s bitstreaming was called "direct" so look for either bitstream or direct.

I am not sure if they changed the wording.

set the slim ps3 to BISTREAM to let the receiver decode everything (youll get to see dolby true hd/dts ma pop on the receiver)

if you leave the ps3 slim on LIMEAR PCM then multich will be all you will see on the receiver

also make sure you check the audio settings and check off all the boxes that apply to you

if that is the case, you CANNOT bitstream and have your receiver show trueHD and DTS HD MA... your equipment should be set up in such a way that your receiver shows PCM or LPCM

I'm doing the same thing.

Posters are correct !!

Must use HDMI for connection !

Set your PS3 to LPCM (I believe it's in the Video Settings section)
Check off audio within your PS3 LPCM 48 KHZ 5.1 (Audio Setting)

Make sure your receiver is set to LPCM , if not it won't play the HD tracks.

To make sure your playing the proper audio, while movie is playing press the display button on PS3 remote and it should show up in the right top corner.

Your reciever will obviously Not show the True-HD or DTS-HD , but the PS3 display will show it.

Your receiver supports decoding of the lossless Blu Ray audio codecs, so you should have the PS3 slim set to "bitstream".

A small TruHD/DTS HD MA symbol should show up on the front of your Onkyo. Remember, usually only the movie is in lossless, not the menus or previews.

I press select on my ps3 slim and I do see now DTS-HD MA and TRUE HD on the top corner. So I’m getting the HD sound now. Thanks guys.. The reason I was getting confuse on other forums because they mention PS3 NOT ps3 slim.

Excellent News.

Best way to try it out is find a movie with 5.1 Dolby Digital and also a True-HD or DTS-HD Track and switch between the two.

I did this for my girlfriend with Into The Blue which had a DD and I think it was DTS-HD, Big Difference.
The audio should sound more spacious and more precise.

Cool similar problem...

Hi there dudes and dudettes!

I have just bought a new Amp - Onkyo 806 - which has support for Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD. I am using HDMI cables as inputs and output to my Samsung 46 inch LCD. I use my PS3 as a blu ray player and its connected to te amp bu HDMI cable. The PS3 is set to linear PCM.

When I play a blu ray disc, the PS3 output is TrueHD, but the light on my Amp that says "TrueHD" doesnt light up. It definitely sounds awesome though... the 7.1 system is great. Just wondering if its TrueHD i am getting or an upscaled Dolby 5.1?

Thanks for your help!

Yogi

Is your PS3 a newer slim model or an older 'fat' model?

If it's a slim model, set it to bitstream and you should see Dolby TrueHD or DTS HDMA light up on your receiver.

If it's an older fat model, it's unable to bitstream the lossless audio to your receiver. Leave it set to LPCM and it will decode the audio internally and send it to the receiver that way. The front of your receiver should light up with MULTICH or PCM or something like that. You ARE getting lossless audio this way. If you're not sure then push the 'select' button (I think) on your PS3 controller and look in the upper right hand corner and see what audio format is playing. Wait until the movie itself is playing before you do this though, because often the menus and previews are not recorded in a lossless format.

This subject has been covered ad naseum over the last few years, but in short:
  • Old PS3: Set to audio output to PCM.
  • Slim PS3: Bitstream if your receiver can decode HD audio codecs, PCM if it can't. (Note: Audio will be identical either way so it doesn't really matter which.)

This is assuming you can send audio via HDMI. If you can't and must use optical cable then set audio output to bitstream regardless of PS3 model.
