My nine year old daughter and I just enjoyed the heck out of Criterion's new release of Modern Times. She loves The Tramp! She giggled like she has at few movies, and was really touched by the story. Pretty amazing I'd say for a movie that's 75 years old. The new release has very good pq and aq for a film of this era. And it has some great making of docs that explain the special effects as well as an alternate ending that Chaplin worked on.

I see that The Great Dictator is coming up soon. I sure hope that Criterion is going to do all of Chaplin's major films. My favorites after these are City Lights, The Gold Rush, and The Circus, although there are others I like a lot too.

What are your favorite Chaplin movies? Why do you think he still lives on when so few actors who reached the peak of their careers in the 20s and 30s are known or enjoyed at all today...?

i've seen his complete filmography (including the sennet shorts). i'd have to say his best work is 1921's The Kid. none of his other films come close in terms of how close the upbringing was. also how personal his first directorial effort was. the latter efforts pale in comparison, especially when sound was introduced.

I can't wait for "The Great Dictator"! It's my favorite Charlie Chaplin film, as it has lot s of heart, and is funny as hell.

Modern Times is great too.

I'll probably get all Charlie Chaplin films on BD, at least the ones that get a great restoration, like Modern Times, which looks phenomenal IMO.

The performance with Buster Keaton at the end of City Lights is one of the funniest ever put on film.

I want them all. Gold Rush, The Kid....

Charlie Chaplin was a genius. He wrote, directed, produced his movies, and wrote the scores too!

The rumors are that Criterion should or probably will release either Gold Rush or City Lights in the coming months. My guess is probably Gold Rush

There has been a newsletter hint for Gold Rush. Check back on Feb 16th and see if it has been added to the May releases and (God forbid) if its not, then check back on March 16th to see if its been added to the June slate. After that, abandon all hope.

If the rate of releases follows the current trend, you can expect City Lights or possibly The Kid in 2013.

I hope the bluray includes the original version of Gold Rush and not the reedited and narrated version Chaplin did much later.

I like Modern Times, but I find it to be fairly creepy with the whole underage girl thing.
