Default Jamo S406hs1 vs Polk Monitors vs Something else

Hello all. My father in law is asking me to help him pick some speakers. Initially he just wants a 3.1 system and based on his price range (around $350-$400 max) I was suggesting Polk Monitor 60 and Polk CS1. Then I saw this Jamo S406hs1 for $250 at Vanns.com. Any thoughts? I cant seem to find any reviews.

They use their system mainly for movies, rock band (we got them hooked), and some music (maybe 25% of the time). Are there other speakers we should be looking at for the price? Thanks for any help.

I have the Polk T90e's (this is the European version of the Polk Monitor 60's, with the same exact specs and looks) and the CS10 (same exact model as the CS1, except it has the black piano gloss on the sides of the speaker cabinet) for sale right now for a total of $275 for the 3 speakers, which is even less than your Dad's budget. If interested, please send me a PM. I believe the Jamo's are more or less the European equivalent (maybe slightly better) of the Polks here in the US, however I have never heard the Jamo's. I can tell you that the Polks are an excellent entry level speaker into the world away from a HTiB set-up or none at all.

thanks but since it is my father inlaw, I am suggesting new for him. Thanks for the offer though.

Does anyone else have thoughts on the jamos? Or any other speakers for the price?

I have a local shop that sells Jamo and I have been able to Demo many of them. Personally I did not enjoy the entry level (in your price range) Jamo speakers as they seemed a bit unbalanced and reminded me more of some old crappy sony speakers I had. But that was my opinion of them.

Try this setup, you will need speaker stands, but it would be overall better then both systems.

http://www.vanns.com/shop/servlet/it...2/jamo-c400cen

then get the Polk PSW10 sub

Total and full system for $358 shipped

Then get some speaker stands
http://www.racksandstands.com/Sanus-BF-31-B-SY0003.html $40

You can also look at Klipsch. You can get the B3's for $150 at Vanns right now and the C1 Center is listed for $79 or C3 for $199.99. I have been very impressed with the performance of the B3's

langn08, thanks for the input.... I wish we can audition them here but I cant find them anywhere. I guess you think they dont compare to the TSis you have, huh?

Callas, would those jamos be better thank the polks? Also, the sub has a different budget (he is getting the PA120). So the $400 max does NOT include the sub.

Thanks for the comments. Any other options or suggestions?

Where are you located? If it's near a 6ave, they sell the Definitive Technology BP6Bs for $250/pair. Unbelievable deal.

They did not sound anything like my TSi400's unfortuneatly. I would stay away unless you can atleast demo some... But with that said I would advise atleast getting a good demo in on ANY speaker brand you are looking into. The most accessable to demo is your Polk's & Klipsch.. Do you have an audio store near by? What have you been able to demo?

I have the Polk TSi with the Cs20 center. That is why I was suggesting the Polk monitor... similar, but cheaper.

as for the Klipsch, I actually have auditioned that klipsch line and it was kinda... shrill is the best word for it. I dont know if it was the setup, but when conversations in the movie happened, certain syllables hurt my ears... I couldnt listen to them too long. The guy that was helping me said it was the tactrix horn and that some people like it and some dont.

So i think I am going to have him steer from the Jamos at this price. Any other suggestions besides the Polks?

Since you said the primary use for your father-in-law will be movies, I would recommend you stay with bookshelves with a good sub. I own Jamo and think they have a similar sound to the Polks, maybe a little warmer, but not much.

The C series is the top of the line for HT speakers, while the S series is the next line down. You could also look into the C 403 from wwstereo.

Any reason you've decided against Jamo? I found them to sound better than the Polk Monitors/TSi's, if only slightly so.
