Default Best for video calibration? Avia?

Hi everyone. I'm trying to find something to calibrate my LCD TV with. After a little more reading I'm kind of sold that I need to do some calibration on my TV. I keep reading about the AVIA disc and wanted to know if this was the way to go. Also, not sure if avia 1 or 2 is better. I've read mixed reviews. Thanks.

If you have something with the THX optimizer on it (most Pixar titles have it) you can use it to get you moving in the right direction, but I hear Avia is better.

1. Spears & Munsil

2. Digital Video Essentials: HD Basics

In that order.

Would not bother with AVIA.

I've never even heard of Spears & Munsil. I'm gonna check that one out.

I have DVE: HD Basics....I wish I knew about Spears & Munsil before that though...and my Panny G10 isn't broken in enough to even try to adjust the contrast levels to get the grayscale correct yet ...and I've put well over 100 hours onto my set in the past week - even while at work

I am still hoping to be able to calibrate this set before the Superbowl this Sunday...

I agree. The S&M title has some uniquely revealing and helpful patters, as well as excellent tests to evaluate the deinterlacing, motion handling, and scaling capabilities of your equipment. DVE:HDB title is worth having as well. It also offers some unique test signals, such as an ambient light level test pattern, including audio tests. There is additional tutorials and explanations of more aspects of imaging and system setup not on the S&M disc. There is also a much greater variety of full motion reference sequences for evaluating how your display looks with such visuals. Both are Blu-ray, while Avia II is still only DVD. However, it can be useful in revealing how your BD player handles standard DVD programs.
