I was pretty much all set on getting a BDP-S300 player before I joined the forums, however, after reading through many of the threads it seems like the PS3 is the best choice with the best picture quality even though I do not play video games in any way, shape, or form.
I was wondering if people can list some advantages of getting the PS3 instead of a stand-alone player. Does it really give the best picture quality and what is the deal with the updates that everyone talks about? I appreciate any help. I know this is probably a redundant topic but I'm really trying to figure out which player to get because I really want to get one this week to go along with my new HDTV that's being delivered this Saturday. 1) Video playback is mostly software so it can constantly be improved.
2) Upscaling is very very good 3) It has built in wireless and can stream music from your home pc thru your home stereo while putting cool backgrounds on your HDTV 4) Movies and Pictures can also be viewed on your HDTV 5) If you have a mouse and keyboard you can surf the net 6) It plays games ![]() |

Logitech has a wireless keyboard im going to get, it has a touchpad on it like a laptop so you dont need a mouse. Watching you tube videos on my HDTV is the best. |

sony release periodic updates for the ps3. included in the updates are various functions that upgrades/updates to improve the ps3. the last update 1.90 allowed 24fps to your HDTV. the previous upgrade was upconversion for standard dvds. so, your regular dvd collection looks better than playing it through a standard dvd player. the list goes on and on.

Don't forget that you can load and run a PowerPC build of the linux kernal on the PS3... I've run both Yellow Dog, and Fedora.
Linux on the PC looks and feels better, but I assume the support from Yellow dog is better if you "subscribe" so you can get the latest sound and video driver builds, I just have a hard time paying for access to software built under Open License As for games, I wasn't a gamer either, but the demos of GTHD and HS are bringing me to the dark side, hell, I have actually bought Oblivion! |

To update, you either connect the PS3 via the Ethernet or Wifi internet connection, or you can download the firmware file from the PS3 website (make sure you get the right one according to your region) and store that on a flashdrive, or a CD-RW. Updating takes about 15 minutes. fuad |

Not that I am saying that you should not get a PS3 as your Blu-Ray player, but I just wanted to tell you some of the possible negitives.
A few people have complained about the fan noise of the PS3. I personally do not have a problem with the fan noise, but the PS3 does run pretty warm because of all the high tech stuff inside and the fan has 3 levels of activeness to keep it running cool. Which brings me to ventilation. Depending on where you want to your Blu-Ray player, the fact that you would not want to put the PS3 in an enclosed space may effect your choice too. Once again, this thing outputs some heat, so a well ventilated area is ideal. It also does not have an IR port on the system. So if you have a nice Harmony Remote or something along those lines. The PS3 will not work with it. But there is a nice bluetooth remote availible for around $25 if you do not wish to use the SIXAXIS controller to opperate the system. Over all, most reviews rate the PS3 as the best value Blu-ray player because it is the cheapest and it runs on par with the best if not better in some aspects. It is also in good position to be compliant with spec 1.1 when that is a mandate for all new players being sold. All it will need is an update, which is free, through either the built in wifi, ethernet port or updated from a download on your PC, then transfered over via flashdrive or memory card/stick. As mentioned by other posters, the PS3 has many other features that make it function as a nice media hub that stand alone BD players will not offer. Hope this helps making you in making your choice. |

Once you register a network account with the PS3 you also have access to the playstation network. The playstation network is free and offers you game demos, movie and game trailers, and the purchase of downloadable games. A lot of the movie trailers are also in high definition. The PS3 also includes a memory stick and SD card slot. If you have any Super Audio cd's you can play them on the PS3. The PS3 to me is the best blu-ray player on the market. Even if you don't play games it's a great deal.

The 360 only handles up to 1080i, while the PS3 goes up to Full 1080p.
The 360 with HD-DVD add-on and a 20GB HDD (smallest) costs about $80 more than a PS3 with a built in Blu-ray and a 60 GB HDD. The internal 360 HDD is a proprietary drive that only works with the Microsoft built XBOX 360 drives. The PS3 has a standard 2.5" internal HDD (laptop size). It will fit any drive that is 2.5". It also lets you change the hard drive without violating anything. The 360 does not even use HD-DVD format for games. PS3 uses standard Blu-ray discs for games for up to 50 GB for game data. PS3 has wireless networking and automatically updates to the latest and greatest firmware for BD movies and games. |

how did we get on the 360? this man is asking about the best bluray player. Just a side note the 360 outputs 1080p over component, VGA, and HDMI on the elite.
