2 Routers on Verizon FiOS??

So, my wife and I are having our first child in May. We're converting our office into the nursery, and moving our computer to the front bedroom. Along with the computer, so goes the router.

The problem this creates is that my PS3, which is connected via WiFi, will have a poor connection (if any at all). My PC doesn't have WiFi, so that router will stay with the computer.

Would I be able to just buy another router and hook it up to the Coax in the room with the PS3 (thereby using the ethernet port of the new router) giving me two routers in the house?

Is there a different solution?

I appreciate any help I can get. Obviously I'm a noob in this regard.

a modem is what the coax goes into which then goes to the router via ethernet cable. unless you have 2 modems there is no point to having 2 routers. if you are worried about signal strength buy a new router. most the routers this day and age will accomodate huge square footed mansions.

Thank you for your reply. Would you have a suggestion on a better wireless router? as I understand it, I should buy one that is 802.11 g (not n)...

What router do you have now, and how far apart will the routed and PS3 be after you move it? Why do you think the signal will be so poor?

You will not be able to use two routers, unless you're using one of them as a bridge...or unless you're in a very abnormal situation where you have two modems in your house. I've never seen that before in a home environment.

What you need, like others have said, is either a router with a better signal range (like the N spec routers have), or a wireless bridge. Either solution should work for you. Another option is to simply hardwire the connection to the PS3, which is what I would do — although I do understand not everyone has the luxury of running cables at their place for whatever reason.

Whoever told you about not getting an N spec router is crazy. That is the way you want to go for sure. They're not even very highly priced anymore, and they're way better than G for a million reasons.

Anything from Linksys will be good to you; that's speaking from personal experience. I recently (December — early Christmas gift to myself) picked up a Time Capsule from Apple, and I absolutely love it. They're pricey, but that's because they also come with a built-in 1TB hard drive for backing up your data. Great range, and compatible with my "old" G devices.

With fios the on demand/ ppv is downloaded/updated via their router the actiontech, now we got ours and I've been quite impressed with it given all the hate for it online. But in our house my brothers 360/ps3 gets quite good reception/speed for being 500-1000+(not sure the exact amount) feet away and going through 3 floors.

But what you would have to do if you wanted to keep you're on demand/ppv (and maybe tv menus not sure though if thats tied into their specific router like on demand/ppv is)
You'd have to bridge the connection to their router.


**** I think I have the newest version of the router it has a white button on the front so maybe if you don't have that one you could call and ask for an upgrade and threaten if they don't give it to you lol.

did not know that the actiontech is a required prereq to get all the updates from fios. if this is the case then you would want to get a wireless bridge for sure or get a newer model just like supersix said since this is rented equipment anyways they should have no problems with giving you the latest model.

Yep, before we switched I'd figure it would be an easy switch get a wicked N router and be set, but after reading online they require you to have theirs up and running other wise you lose features, which is why we sat on switching for awhile from all the negative feedback on the routers, but like I said before I was shocked to see how well this ones actually preforming.

stay away from Buffalo, D-Link, other cheap routers or else you will have one big headache on your shoulders

Go with a Cisco (Linksys) router, they are the best on the market.

I wanted to just thank all of you for this information.

In the end, I didn't need a new router (yet). When I measured how effectively the PS3 received the signal, it was a drop of only 10% or so from the old location, so I'm still firmly in the 70s...
