I read that the PS3 Slim's Blu-ray player is inferior to the original PS3, according to Engadget and Home Cinema Choice. That the blu-ray loading time is a bit slower. And I've also heard the disc drive is a bit louder than the original. Is this true? Aside from the slow loading time, is there a blu-ray quality difference?

Really? Did you have the PS3 fat before getting the slim?

Never had a slim always had the original ps3s even when i had to sell my first one I turned around and got an 80 gig few months later... I don't like how the slim looks to begin with so that was already a turn off. The whole noise thing I haven't had any problem so far on the original ps3s. I've always thought they were quieter than the 360.
And for Engadget, there bunch of Fanboy reviewers anyways. They must like the 360 better or a stand alone BDP than a PS3. Read what they say about other phones when they compare it to Iphone.. they like to kiss Steve Jobs @$$.... |

I've also owned both versions (currently own the slim) Those issues seem to be of the nit-picky area. Not real "issues" at all. I sit 9 and a half feet away from my 55" and the player and have NEVER heard the PS3. I do have a audio system so again, they seen to be a bit "nit-picky". My .02

I have also like other have said owned a phaty model and now own a slim model. It my opinion the slim is louder a tiny bit for loading the disc in. But thats about it. I like the look better, and its quiter. My phaty would always kick in the fan and if you stod close enought o it like maybe 5 ft or szo you could hear the fan it wasn't loud but you could hear it. My slim I NEVER hear it even super close up I never hear the fan. that and it seems to stay cooler longer to the touch. I love my slim. Like all PS3's but I love my slim.

I've had both and the fat was DEFINITELY louder as far as fan goes. But my slim cracks and creeks ALL THE TIME from, what I assume is, heat expansion and contraction.
As far as loading times, I don't really notice a difference at all. Maybe i'm just not concerned with the nanosecond as much as other users... But to me either model is fine... If you want the BEST model wait for the newest slim that coming out with the faster wifi. It'll do bitstreaming audio and be faster with WIFI. |

The slims loading time was slower than the OG PS3 when it first came out. Then the firmware that was released around the same time brought it back up to speed.
That EG and HCC test are from last year with the 2.80 FW. They need to update the test. Which they won't and continue to mislead people. |

I had the 40GB and the fan was pretty loud, i sold it and got the slim and it's deadly quiet. I sit probably 5-6 feet away and i can't even hear it.
Mine does make those creek and crack sounds too which is normal because of heat expansion. The slim is basically my dedicated blu-ray player and absolutely love it. |

I have an 80G & a Slim and the Slim is much, much quieter. Love the HDMI control also. It's just cool to put in a disc and the PS3 turns on, tv turns on, surround amp turns on, movie/game auto starts, & I'm good-to-go. But, no memory stick reader, only two usb ports, no SACD support, & no backward compatibility are major minuses overall.

Sony really needs to put SACD back in the PS3, even if as only an option. I would pay another $50 for SACD capability in the Slim. And since basically all of Sony's current line of Blu-ray players - PS3 excepted - have SACD capability they should really reconsider their decision to take said capability out of it. Luckily my 60GB launch model is still running strong (knock on wood), but I would hate to have to replace it with an Oppo when it finally does go to console heaven.
