That is on my list of toys now. I hope it has an ATSC HD tuner built-in. That would be sa-weet!

What's the point? The whole purpose of high definition is to be viewed on a large screen. That's why I can't figure out why Alpine is releasing an HD DVD player for cars. Unless someone is going to have at least a 27" HDTV in the back seat for the kids.

Very simple. If one of the two formats is actually suppossed to eventually replace DVD, you will want portable players, car players, etc. in order to be able to play your discs as you do now.

In my case we have a mini-van with DVD player. I have to buy some films in both Blu-Ray and DVD for use in the van. I've already heard complaints from my kids that they can't take a Blu-Ray disc and play it elsewhere.......so it's not just size of screen that is the issue here.

yup..and with OLED even smaller screens can get that HD movie watching experience due to among other things that killer contrast ratio:

example:

Sony's 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio 27-inch OLED HDTV

and since they will already have 17" it will only be a matter of time

Heck, they may not even increase the resolution, just make it compatible with blu-ray.

Ever see the early portable LCD tv's? The resolution was NOT 480 x 720. Maybe 300 x 600 on some models. Who is to say these portable blu-rays will even do 720p? Do you know what the cost would be? Therefore to keep the price down, they may only support 480p at 16:9.

The future of screens is OLED. Organic LED. That is our only hope of a HD screen in a portable device because the OLED compound can virtually be printed out like an inkjet. That should make for fairly quick and easy HD screens of near any size.

Well considering the smallest 1080line screen I have ever heard of is about 14".

I am sure there are smaller but seriously, once you get to that size the benefits of 1920x1080 are severely limited.

Oh I wouldn't say that. Suppose the new players took on the dual duty of being e-book readers. Hopefully via a simple USB port, or other common memory device. That resolution would make for crisp legible text in smaller sizes.

In my book, 1080p is a must.
