Default Previews That Don't Depict What the Movie Actually Is (Use Spoilers Tags)

I watched American Gangster the other night and while thinking about it, I realized how much the previews didn't match the movie at all. At least to me.

What I saw in the previews were numerous scenes that seemed to depict Frank Lucas (Denzel Washington) and Richie Roberts (Russell Crowe) having a long, drawn out back-and-forth relationship in which both characters tried to outwit each other. The lasting impression in my mind from the previews was when Lucas walks out of a building and sees Richie resting against a car. I just assumed that they had met before and knew each other from the way it was filmed and how the men looked at eac other. But then once i was done watching the film (which is great by the way) I realized that they never once talked or met before. Richie knew OF Lucas, but Lucas had never heard or seen him before.

So my question to you is: has this ever happened to you with any films? and has it made you think less of said film when it turned out to not be what you thought it was about?

I knew the whole time (obviously) that American Gangster was a crime drama film, but I had the impression the two main characters knew each other and interacted throughout the film. But they did not.

So is this just me thinking too much from a simple preview? Or do you think the studio did this on purpose to maybe get more people to come see it?

Inglourious Basterds is an obvious recent example. The trailers made it look like some Dirty Dozen-esque Brad Pitt vehicle, but the titular characters are in the film for maybe a quarter of the running time.

Should be in the movies forum, but:

Fight Club. The preview led me to not seeing the film. It was only through strong recommendations on another forum that I watched it when it hit DVD. Glad I did. Honestly, I don't envy the marketing department trying to put together a representative trailer for that film.

Oh look, P@t_Mtl is trying to derail yet another thread with a petty Avatar debate.

Yeah, was I wrong for expecting him to be in the movie for MORE than ten minutes tops, and that the movie wasn't completely about the theater girl dressing up to the Cat People theme?...

On a lesser note, animation fans are royally p*ssed at Dreamworks right now for trying to sell "How to Train Your Dragon" as a Dreamworks comedy, so that nobody would see it--
Anyone watch those Olympics-commercial shorts and think that the movie really would be about wacky Vikings and their modern-stone-age pals?

Man! I can't even have fun anymore

I am only jesting about Avatar. It's not horrible just not as great for me as everyone is making it to be.

I do have one releated to the subject of this thread.

Toys with Robin Williams, preview sure did not make you ready for what you would see. It's strange however as I do not dislike the movie.

I was having fun just like P@t_Mtl. Note the wink, smile, and raspberry.

I didn't get my panties in a bunch cause he didn't care for Avatar.

I think the previews for Watchmen made it look like another super hero movie to take the kids to....of course people should clue in that it is an R-rated film but I guess some people will just never look beyond what is in front of them and try to look beneath the surface. Many kids were being dragged out by their parents when I saw it in theatres.

I didn't think they we're, I think R-rated superhero's won't break the mainstream because they are so hard to market!

Whiteout

the trailer made the movie look like a alien in the arctic type supernatual conspiracy movie in the vien of The Thing, but the movie had no supernatuiral elements to it at all and was more of a whodunit set in the snow...very dissapointed with that movie
