Run away!! Run away!!

Just kidding (sort of). Insignia isn't known to be a great brand. What are you looking for in a receiver and what kind of budget are you on?

For $179 this seems like a decent receiver. Obviously its not going to compete with a big budget box; and most won't notice the difference. I'm looking at this for a 2nd room. The reviews are decent; I may go check this out, I have a $45 reward zone certificate.

here's the manual

It'll make the dts-hd master audio light up. You may need that light to reassure your ears.

Obviouslyl this unit isn't for audio snob's like yourself. Not everyone needs a $500 or $1000 receiver.

If your wanting uncompressed audio at a decent price for a smaller room or 2nd room this should fine. I have an Onkyo 606 for my man cave but the family isn't always down there to watch movies.

Given that I did buy a Harman/Kardon today, you may be right.

However, you may not be able to hear the difference between dolby digital and dolby TrueHD with this receiver. If this is the cheapest solution, so be it. If the choice is between this and an entry level Yamaha or Pioneer, you may be better off with one of those.

I understand that this reciever isn't going to sound like a Klipsch or Bose system, but I would find it hard to believe that you wouldn't hear a difference between lossy and lossless audio simply due to brand/price point.

Actually, it may sound better depending on the speakers paired with it.

As for Insignia/Dynex brands, they are basically 'disposable' electronics. If you want to run the very real risk of replacing this unit in a year or two, go ahead and drop the $$. Personally, I'd spend a little more for a reputable brand.

I didn't look at the brand. I looked at the specifications (p 24).

That can be said of anything electronic today; when do we "fix" anything anymore? He knows its not a Klipsch or an Onkyo.

Why does everyone have to bash things that are priced for the "average" consumer? Unless your an Audiophile this receiver will do fine for the "avg" Joe. Not everyone can drive a Lexus or Benz, but you can get a good deal with a Honda, Hundai, or Kia!!

Hondas a seperate tier than hyundia and kia, but hondas still somewhat midclass, the Lexus and Menz mite be 2 grand marnatz and denons, but theres still yamaha, onkyo, pioneer, sony, etc a def cut above insignia and store brands

Hyundai is on par with Honda's today if you do your research and Kia's are just as reliable; what you are paying extra for with a Acura (which is made by Honda) is extra bells and whistles.

Kia's and Hyundai's are great cars for reliability and price but obviously there are better options available.

This guy would be fine with an Insignia but you automatically dismiss it not knowing what his needs are.

Hyundais and Kias are turning out to be very reliable.. but from a marketing standpoint at least and resale value/long standing reputation Hondas seem a step up. I would dismiss it cause I worked the inventory returns at a best buy and my bins were always 3/4s insignia and dynex. I was working for them when they unveiled Insignia and they made it no secret it was affordability over quality. Some people crap on Sony because they make less than $100 speakers and less than $300 receivers, and used to be a huge thing to say you had sony decades ago. But i have a house full of sony stuff from 90s-today and even my oldest tape deck is still working great.

OP if you buy an Insignia definately buy BBuys service plan.. but then it again that extra fee brings the price to about the same as the next step up brand receiver.

I worked for Best Buy from 95 to 2004. Prior to Insignia; I would say Slyvania was the big "return", but at the same token; Sony receivers were the most returned of what we sold at the time in audio equipment. I too am a sony buff; but more when it comes to camcorders and pS3 than audio equipment.

Remember, at one point Honda was the "cheap entry level model" just like Samsung was in electronics. Just because the Insignia is under $500 doesn't mean it won't do what he needs it to do is all I'm saying.

Yea- I hear ya about everything.. My sony receiver is going on 7 years, and I love sony stuff, but im going to get a new yamaha for a change. I looked on bestbuys site and they have alot less stuff than usual for some reason.. making the isignia price really standout.. but if you look elsewhere or on amazon theres more in the price range. OP check out this one: $200

Does this unit handle all the uncompressed formats? The specs are kinda vague; an extra $20 for me isn't a big deal. I'm just looking for something with multiple HDMI and uncompressed for my family room setup.
