Default Front Speakers in a 7.1

This may be a stupid question but what benefit is there to having front speakers with frequency responses below 50-60 Hz if the cross overs are typically set at higher frequencies? (like THX @ 80) and having the subs handle everything from there down.
I see some people that have full blown towers that get below 35 Hz or or even lower?
It would seem that good sub(s) and a good set of sats. would give you everything you need for HT and music for the most part?
Thanks, BZB

Actually for a straight HT application or primarily a HT application a set of quality bookshelf speakers perform admirably. Towers can provide some added bass response down to 80 hz, but most speakers tend to perform not so well at the low end of their frequency range. Therefore crossing over allows them to do what they do best. Focus on upper and mid bass and the mids and highs.

In a 2-channel music application towers do better at providing bass then bookshelf speakers would. NOT everyone likes a subwoofer in their music, so towers are the prefered way to go.

Some people think that speaker stands up front look bad, and prefer the towers, or affraid the stands or speakers on them could fall off or be pushed off.

Some people think the more drivers they have the better the speaker is, which isn't true necessarily.

Really I think you need to think about what works best in your situation and what you like the most, and also, from bookshelfs, you can get speakers that are from a higher line at the same price as towers, and essentially have better bookshelfs then another persons equally priced towers. Then as you said, with a good sub, have an awesome setup.

Did you have something in mind?

Thank you for your response.
I may go with some book shelf up front eventually due to space constrants.
Right now I have Mirage OS3 fs and OS3 cc.
I'm thinking about rearranging things to have my ULS DD up front and Sats.
They wouldn't fit (ULS) with the towers.

ULS, are you refering to a Hsu ULS Subwoofer?

Yes, I have a "set".
I have them co-located behind the listen position right now and I'm not having any issues with localization and I have a fairly flat response (thanks to an EQ-1).

Rule #1: Pics...or it never happened

Just teasing. It does sound like you have a nice setup though. You should put some pics in your gallery when you get a chance.

Default I've got a mess!

Just about the time I get everything in place I add something-lol (just added the EQ-1 Friday it's still on top of the AV stand, hooked up of course).
It seems as if I'm not buying something I'm moving something!!
I do have a couple of pics on the HSU forum under "The ULS is Here" but I can't access them from here.
Thank you for the compliment

Awesome.... I want to hear them.... I really like Hsu subs.

What speakers do you have.... I am sure you need something quick to keep up with the subs? Some Nice bookshelfs that I am looking into are Dynaudio Focus 140s. They have good deep bass for a bookshelf too... I think you'd appreciate them.
