Default Speaker re-edging

Hello guys, I have a set of Yamaha speakers I've been owning for at least 10 years now, and the edging around the woofers have deteriorated to the point where there is very little left. Probably 75 % of it has fallen off already.
I've contacted Yamaha for a possible replacement set of woofers, but of course they are too old, and no parts are available.
I looked into possibly buying a re-edge kit and doing it myself, but I spoke to someone at a local electronics store who advised me not to do it because I could mess up the speakers and ruin them. I think he just wanted to try and sell me some new ones.
My question to you knowledable folks is, do any of you know of a reputable place that I could send my woofers to have them re-edged, or should I scratch the idea and purchase new ones? I really like my speakers and would love to keep them, but if it's going to cost an arm and a leg it may not be worth it.
Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated.

Check post #1 of https://forum.blu-ray.com/speakers/1...upgrading.html thread. I have listed many speaker repair shops. Also, check Parts Express. They have drivers that may work for your Yamaha speakers.

Although it isn't available online yet, the May issue of Stereophile had an article (Listening: Art Dudley) in it about doing this, seemed pretty straight forward and worth it if you enjoy the way the speakers sounded in the past.

Thank you guys for the information. I will look into this information tomorrow when I have more time. I do indeed like the speakers I have. I've enjoyed them for years, and would hate to give them up.
I've watched videos online on how to re-edge speakers and it seems easy enough, but so afraid to mess them up still.
Big Daddy, your idea about replacing the woofer is something I was contemplating, but read some where that you have to be careful about that as well, to make sure your getting the same specs as the current one or it won't sound right. I guess I will need to pull one out and check all the specs on it to make sure I'm getting the right one. It's an 8" woofer so I don't imagine it would cost much. Thanks again guys, I'll look into this tomorrow.

PS, worse comes to worse, I may just go over to BB and pick up a pair of Polk towers for 2 or 300 a pair, although that would be my last resort.

BD, I see that Parts Express can re-foam mine for 25 a piece. I may consider just sending my woofers to them and let them do it. Anyone out there use them for speaker repair before?

I have never had re-foaming done by Parts Express, but I have ordered many different items such as drivers, crossovers, etc. from them without any problems. Parts Express is a classy vendor.

Thanks Big Daddy, I'm not exactly sure what I'm going to do yet, but I sure appreciate the help. It looks like they have a pretty smooth operation from what I've seen on their site, and if they re-edge my speakers for 25 each that's a deal.

Thanks again

Re-foaming for 25bucks a piece is a great deal. I've had speakers re-foamed before and they will last you another 20yrs.

Thanks Sammy, that is encouraging. Yes, I can deal with 50 buck to get them repaired. At least that is what the web site quoted for my speakers after I went through the process of filling out the information. I'm still going to look around a bit and see what's out there. I need to be able to trust them before I send them my speakers.

Here is a shot of one of them. To the left is the sub that came with the set. Vintage I know, but they sound pretty nice..

Ah, now rethinking this whole repair thing and may spring for some new towers. I have Infinity center and rears, so I'm thinking about getting a set of Infinity for the fronts to round out the package. Of course I;ll keep my Yamaha sub running though, it still sound good. Well, I guess it's back to shopping.

Audioholics Store is a good source for Infinity speakers.

Thanks Big Daddy, you've been a big help. I was considering Polk, but I just read through the Infinity thread and thought I would go that route. Maybe a pair in the Primus line or something.
Thanks again.

Well, I'm thinking of going with something small to place on stands instead of towers. Thinking about the Primus P162 Bookshelf model. Anyone out there have these? I don't have a dealer around here that I can demo them, so I may have to make a blind buy on these.

Or if anyone has any better suggestions. My receiver is an old Onkyo surround receiver that puts out 80 watts per channel front and center in surround mode, and 100 watts per channel in 2 channel mode. (8 ohm). I figure bookshelves might be less expensive as well.

Edit: WOW, just found P162's at Crutchfield for 84.99 each. Very tempting..
