Default 7.1 speaker configuration question

Hi. I'm wondering if I was going to put together 7.1 with some different speakers and for the 2 sets of rears (side and back) would I want a larger pair as the side speakers or the back speakers? Thanks.

Personally, I would try to keep them the same size speakers - if not the same exact speakers for both.

If you want to keep the $$ down and get smaller speakers for one of the sourrounds, then get smaller rears. Sides are more important IMO. But yah, you wana keep all the speakers the same brand for the most part.

Getting the same tonal quality I think should be more important than the size of the speaker therefore buying the same brand gives you the best shot regardless of size.

Yeah I hear you. I'm going to try to pick up another set of those HD7s I'm using right now for rears.

Side speakers: Large.

Rears: Nah, small's fine. ...Same brand is a good idea though.

* What are the dimensions of your room by the way?

* I would try your sub position at the front wall between your front left speaker and center speaker.
And I will position your chair about two feet forward.
Then just add the side surround speakers on speaker' stands at about 90 to 110 degree angles, on each side of you. ...Say 100 degree (from the center speaker of course).

Of course, it would be more ideal to have your two back surrounds (on ceiling) closer together by few feet (perhaps three or so), but that's a tough one now with your holes already in place.
* Personally I prefer my rears on that rear wall or stands, but that's me.
If you can aim them at your head that would help (their tweeters).

Actually that's where I had my sub I could tell it was coming from the left side there which pissed me off. I did the "subwoofer crawl" on friday night and ended up where it is now. I LOVE it. I have to get a long cable this week and run the cable but I think I'm pretty much set on where it is. If I had the money right now I'd buy another sub but I really need to get a new receiver instead. I may hold off on the 7.1 thing for now unless I find another pair of HD7s cheap which is possible. It was one of those ideas that popped in my head last night when I was watching Daybreakers (killer sound BTW) and it was in 7.1. I thought, ooo, that sounds like a great idea. Then my brains starts figuring out what I need and alas this thread was born. I have random ideas like that that turn into fun projects. Might nip this one in the bud for now but I'm pretty set on the sub location for now. I love having it right behind me. Good thing my wife is very understanding about the power cable running to it from the back right corner

I was going to post this this morning , I will now !

The most important thing is to Timbre match your front 3 speakers . The surrounds do not have to match the fronts .

The surrounds don't have to match the Surround Rears either , Sure the same or same brand would be best . But we are talking about ambient sounds coming from them , Its not the front sound stage !

You want your seating to form a triangle with your front L/R . if the Front L/R are 8 feet apart , then you want your chair 8 feet from the left & right speakers . Moving the sub around to find where it sounds best is what you want to do with it !

Hope this helped

Hi Brent,

We simply go as one step at a time; the room' dimensions just came in as you can see for yourself. We are experimenting right now, all is suggestions at this stage.
And if you read the posts, you can see that I did not have any clue yet on the sub and other things. We are in the process of communication as we speak.

* Name's Bob, shorter to type.
