USA Ghostwatch (1992) coming from 101 Films

https://mvdb2b.com/s/Ghostwatch/MVD10350BR

Street date: 10/25/22

Quote:
The BBC gives over a whole evening to an 'investigation into the supernatural'. Four respected presenters and a camera crew attempt to discover the truth behind 'The most haunted house in Britain', expecting a light-hearted scare or two and probably the uncovering of a hoax. They think they are in control of the situation. They think they are safe. The viewers settle down and decide to watch 'for a laugh'. Ninety minutes later the BBC, and the country, was changed, and the consequences are still felt today.

I was going to make a thread for this earlier, but got sidetracked. Never seen it, but it sounds pretty interesting. I'm surprised a BD of it is coming out here before the UK, unless there is a planned UK release too.

I think it'll be announced by 101 when their next set of announcements happens.

It's being distributed by MVD on behalf of 101, so they probably let it slip a little early. I was wanting to see this after watching WNUF last year, so I'm glad we are getting it in the US.

I just wonder why is the cover art DVD size. Maybe it's temp.

This was the coolest surprise I've seen in a while. This is way WAY better than the WNUF Halloween special an an easy pre-order for me. It's hokey and unbelievably dated now but if a person can put themselves into the 1992 mindset when watching it, it's easy to see how it would have fooled folks when it aired and why it's as liked as it is.

Why a blu-ray? Was this shot on film? It was shot to look like live video. Is there some extra to fill out the disk?

PAL videotape, and specifically mimicking a live broadcast (so let’s hope they don’t convert to 24p and lose that live video look).

Assuming a conversion from PAL to 60i as part of the upscale, you’ll get the full 576i detail vs. the 480i it would be on US DVD. Add in better compression, presumably lossless audio, etc.

Blu-ray is the best way to present such material.

i never, ever expected to see this title hit blu-ray so i'm ecstatic. years ago, i downloaded a torrent of this when the dvd was out of print and i went in knowing almost nothing about it. i found the experience genuinely chilling, even though yes, some of it can come off a little hokey. i enjoyed it so much that i plunked down significant money for the oop region 2 dvd. no regrets.

given how good a job vinegar syndrome (or one of its millions of partner labels) did with wnuf halloween special, i believe anything is possible when it comes to HD presentations based on dodgy origins.

i wonder if the distributors will nab that long "behind the curtains" documentary that was released independently a few years ago.

Pre-order is up on Amazon. I went ahead and placed an order. I'm very curious to see whether this will be in HD or just an SD upscale. Neither result would surprise me.

I have it on DVD and I always thought it was shot on video. Certainly the remote stuff at the house is.video. Going by the date, it would have to be regular standard definition PAL. The program only runs an hour I believe. Are there supplements?

I will definitely be picking up this title. I just wish the release date was a few weeks earlier so I could have it in time for Halloween.

Given the time in which this was released I could see it being shot on video or film. I'm hoping that it was shot on film as this will be a substantial upgrade if so. As for the runtime, it's a roughly 90 minute "Broadcast".

I just looked it up. It was shot on hand held video cameras and the studio shots were video as well. Probably 25 fps PAL. This is going to be an upscale like Dr Who and Faulty Towers. Running time is 91 minutes.

It was made on 1" videotape - standard for most BBC programmes of the time.

Unless 101 Films do something spectacularly stupid (never to be ruled out with VT productions on BD) it'll be upscaled and should be 1080i60 for US use. The running time should be just under 91 minutes,

If it's not 1080i60 and just under 91 minutes, well they'll have done something spectacularly stupid...

EDIT
Beaten to it while I was typing!

The location footage was shot using hand held betacams I think. Like news cameras. I can't see that footage benefitting from an upscale much.

I saw this live as a 14 year old. Absolutely scarred me. Terrifying. Might pick it up but I've spent the last 30 years trying to forget it.
