4:45-5:45 Our Heroes Have More Fun: the Anti-Heroes of Showtime— The 21st century anti-hero has become one of the driving forces in recent pop culture. When it comes to the television anti-hero, Showtime has the winning formula. Hear firsthand from the showrunners, creators, and actors who have helped define this phenomenon. Dexter's Michael C. Hall and showrunner Chip Johannessen (24) delve into the phenomenon of Dexter Morgan, the serial killer you can't help rooting for; David Duchovny and Tom Kapinos of Californication discuss why Hank Moody is the "bad boy" we love despite his obvious shortcomings; and Mary-Louise Parker and Jenji Kohanof Weeds interpret pot-dealing soccer mom Nancy Botwin's moral decisions, as the line between right and wrong is not always as simple as black or white. Plus: Nurse Jackie—despite a little pill-popping along the way—is a smart no-nonsense nurse, who if you're ever taken to the hospital, you had better hope she's the first person you see. With heroes like these, who needs villains? Breaking the occasional promise, law, or commandment is all in a day's work, and one thing's for sure - Showtime heroes never let doing the right thing get in the way of having a good time. Ah, Comic-Con, where you can attend a panel presentation and pretend that you have achieved a certain level of intimacy with a TV show's stars, producers or writers, in spite of the hundreds or even thousands of other people occupying the same auditorium as you. Of course, the best part about going to these panels, especially the pilot screenings, is trying to remember any differences that might arise when the pilot actually airs, whether it's entirely new sequences being shot or a new actor filling in for a role that has been recast. Furthermore, the worst part, especially for a show that's airing during the Summer, is being given spoilers (arrgh, I'm recalling Torchwood: Children of Earth from last year).

While it may or may not be fun to play "Which show does NOT belong at Comic-Con," I'm willing to go beyond the usual sci-fi, fantasy and horror boundaries to be okay with action/adventure (Burn Notice; Human Target) and certain crime shows, since they would fall under the mystery genre. That would be shows like Bones and Castle, although, CSI and NCIS will have a muted (not full-blown, dedicated panels) presence this year (I'm actually okay with NCIS being at the Con, since the show's got a goofy, endearing charm; I'm not sure about NCIS: Los Angeles, mainly because the premise of it being focused on deep-cover operations gets thrown out the window every week and "characters" get slapped together in hours...NCIS: Night at the Improv...anyone?).

I'm also willing to accept subversive comedies under the Comic-Con tent, so I'm fine with It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, but less forgiving to The Office (appeared at the Con two years ago?) and The Middle (they screened their pilot last year). Also, some comedies play directly to a geeky audience, such as The Big Bang Theory and Glee, so those are fine.

Anyway, here are some of the panels that I'm thinking of attending:

Thursday
1:00pm Burn Notice
2:15pm White Collar
3:30pm Psych
6:00pm Dexter

Friday
11:30am The Walking Dead
2:15pm The Cape
3:30pm Terra Nova
4:45pm Falling Skies
6:30pm TV Guide Magazine: The 2010 Hot List

Saturday
11:15am The Event
1:00pm The Write Stuff: Creating Genre Television
3:15pm No Ordinary Family
5:15pm Nikita
6:15pm Human Target

Sunday
10:00am Smallville
11:15am Supernatural
1:30pm Glee
