Default Question about 3.1

If I have to go with a 3.1 system due to finances and current layout of my living room, can anybody give me some opinions on this set-up? This way, I can upgrade to 5.1 or 7.1 when I can afford the speakers and the contractor to bury my wires, lol. I know it won't sound the best, but will it be serviceable? I will also be running a pretty decent sub.

thanks

What I would suggest is an inexpensive way to get great sound is to get into a Bookshelf speaker setup that later when you go to buy the floorstanders can be used as the rear surrounds. Also get the matching center speaker for the towers so that all you have to save up for is towers. I will say that a great 3.1 setup will be a lot better then a mediocure 5.1 or 7.1.

Bookshelfs that should be good on a budget
Energy CB-10s or CB-20s
PSB Image B5 or B6 or Alpha B1s
Jamo C 603
Focal Chorus 705V
Totem Dreamcatcher

for a sub, check into elemental designs, Hsu, SVS, Outlaw, or BIC and Premier Acoustics.

I've been using 3.1 for a while now! (check out my setup)

Although I do miss the enveloping sound of 5.1 or even 7.1, my living room is not well suited for surround sound, so 3.1 is plenty good for me!

Im contemplating doing in-ceiling speakers for surrounds, but having a 1 year old son, I don't have much time or money to go cutting into my roof. (although one day I might just do it. )

callas has given you an excellent number of options, including a subwoofer in the mix as well as some respected bookshelves to start with.

for what its worth, id consider investing the bulk of the budget towards a great soundstage, composed of the front left, right and center speaker. why ignore the subwoofer? well, it depends. my priorities are the front speakers, then work with the subwoofer, then the surrounds.
